The Saint John the Baptist Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for Lancusi and Bolano, two neighboring villages in the Municipality of Fisciano, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Here, the Baptist is more than just a patron saint; he is a pillar of local identity that marks the rhythm of community life, drawing back families who have moved away and turning the streets of the Irno Valley into a grand open-air gathering place for a few days.
Celebrations revolve around June 24th, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, and span about ten days. As with many festivals in Southern Italy, the calendar follows two paths: a religious program managed by the SS. Martino e Quirico Parish and a civil program organized by the Saint John the Baptist Festival Committee of Lancusi.
The liturgical aspect is the heart of the festival, involving the entire parish community, which prepares for weeks in advance with meetings, catechesis, and prayer. Recurring highlights include:
In 2025, the saint's relic was also the centerpiece of the blessing of service vehicles—ambulances, vans, and utility trucks—belonging to the "La Solidarietà" volunteer association of Fisciano: a gesture that perfectly captures the civic and supportive spirit with which the town experiences its festival.
As evening falls, the town center transforms. Luminarie (ornamental light displays) create arches of light over the main streets, kiosks light up, and the squares become a stage. Past editions have featured:
As in any self-respecting patronal festival, food is part of the ritual. Along the festival route, you will find food stalls and stands offering specialties from the Salerno area: fried delicacies, sausage sandwiches, local cheeses and dairy products, pastries, and the classic nougat and brittle sold at stalls, along with cotton candy for the children.
Lancusi and Bolano are located in the lower part of the Fisciano territory, a municipality also known for hosting the main campus of the University of Salerno. We are in the Irno Valley, just a few kilometers from Baronissi, Mercato San Severino, and the city of Salerno: a location that makes the festival easily accessible and explains the influx of visitors from nearby towns.
Those looking for an authentic patronal festival, not manufactured for tourism, will find exactly that here: the devotion of the pallbearers, the sound of the bands, the decorated balconies, and families gathering in the streets until late at night. It is an excellent way to experience the popular religiosity of inland Campania, just a stone's throw from the Amalfi Coast but in a completely different setting.
At the time of writing, no official dates or program have been published for the 2026 edition of the patronal festival of Lancusi-Bolano, a hamlet of the Municipality of Fisciano (province of Salerno, Campania).
Based on previous editions, the festivities take place in the second half of June and revolve around June 24th, the solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The calendar usually alternates liturgical celebrations, a vigil of light, a procession with the statue and relic of the patron saint, brass band concerts, musical evenings in the square, light displays, food stalls, and a final fireworks show.
To find out the exact dates and the program for the 2026 edition, it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Saint John the Baptist Festival Committee of Lancusi and the announcements of the SS. Martino e Quirico Parish. This page will be updated as soon as information becomes public.
