About Saint John the Baptist in Lancusi

Every June, the villages of Lancusi and Bolano celebrate their patron saint with the Saint John the Baptist Festival. The event features a novena, solemn masses, a vigil of light, and a procession carrying the saint's relic through the streets. Alongside the religious program, the organizing committee hosts brass band concerts, musical evenings, light displays, and food stalls, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display. An authentic local festival in the heart of the Irno Valley, in the province of Salerno.

A patronal festival in the heart of the Irno Valley

The Saint John the Baptist Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for Lancusi and Bolano, two neighboring villages in the Municipality of Fisciano, in the province of Salerno, Campania. Here, the Baptist is more than just a patron saint; he is a pillar of local identity that marks the rhythm of community life, drawing back families who have moved away and turning the streets of the Irno Valley into a grand open-air gathering place for a few days.

Celebrations revolve around June 24th, the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, and span about ten days. As with many festivals in Southern Italy, the calendar follows two paths: a religious program managed by the SS. Martino e Quirico Parish and a civil program organized by the Saint John the Baptist Festival Committee of Lancusi.

The religious program

The liturgical aspect is the heart of the festival, involving the entire parish community, which prepares for weeks in advance with meetings, catechesis, and prayer. Recurring highlights include:

  • the novena and daily liturgical celebrations in the days leading up to June 24th, held in the San Martino Vescovo church;
  • the vigil of light on the night between June 23rd and 24th, one of the most evocative moments of the entire calendar;
  • holy masses held from dawn until dusk on the day of the Nativity, including the solemn mid-morning mass;
  • the solemn procession with the statue and relic of Saint John the Baptist along the streets of Lancusi and Bolano, accompanied by pallbearers, local associations, and civil and religious authorities;
  • celebrations dedicated to the sick, the pallbearers, and parish groups.

In 2025, the saint's relic was also the centerpiece of the blessing of service vehicles—ambulances, vans, and utility trucks—belonging to the "La Solidarietà" volunteer association of Fisciano: a gesture that perfectly captures the civic and supportive spirit with which the town experiences its festival.

The civil program: bands, lights, and bustling squares

As evening falls, the town center transforms. Luminarie (ornamental light displays) create arches of light over the main streets, kiosks light up, and the squares become a stage. Past editions have featured:

  • grand brass band concerts in the Campanian tradition, with local ensembles and guests from neighboring towns, performing marches and operatic transcriptions;
  • evenings of folk and Neapolitan music, with dance orchestras, folk groups, and cover bands popular with the youth;
  • theatrical performances and entertainment organized by local associations;
  • the final fireworks display, which closes the festivities and draws crowds from surrounding municipalities.

Local flavors

As in any self-respecting patronal festival, food is part of the ritual. Along the festival route, you will find food stalls and stands offering specialties from the Salerno area: fried delicacies, sausage sandwiches, local cheeses and dairy products, pastries, and the classic nougat and brittle sold at stalls, along with cotton candy for the children.

Where it takes place

Lancusi and Bolano are located in the lower part of the Fisciano territory, a municipality also known for hosting the main campus of the University of Salerno. We are in the Irno Valley, just a few kilometers from Baronissi, Mercato San Severino, and the city of Salerno: a location that makes the festival easily accessible and explains the influx of visitors from nearby towns.

Why it's worth the trip

Those looking for an authentic patronal festival, not manufactured for tourism, will find exactly that here: the devotion of the pallbearers, the sound of the bands, the decorated balconies, and families gathering in the streets until late at night. It is an excellent way to experience the popular religiosity of inland Campania, just a stone's throw from the Amalfi Coast but in a completely different setting.
