The patronal feast of Vittoria, blending faith, tradition, and popular devotion
The Saint John the Baptist Festival is the most significant patronal celebration in Vittoria, a city in the Province of Ragusa, nestled in the heart of southeastern Sicily. Saint John the Baptist has been venerated as the city's protector since 1693, the year of the terrible Val di Noto earthquake that devastated eastern Sicily; tradition holds that Vittoria was spared through the Saint's intercession. Since then, popular devotion has never waned, and the July festival remains one of the strongest expressions of identity for the entire Vittoria community.
Festivities begin on the night of June 23rd to 24th, the eve of the liturgical Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, with the opening of the Basilica to pilgrims. A particularly moving tradition is the "Viagghiu" (the "journey"), a pilgrimage on foot from neighboring towns and villages to Vittoria to attend the first Eucharistic celebration of the day at dawn, around 4:30 AM. It is an ancient custom rooted in faith, sacrifice, and night-time walking, bringing together entire families and parish communities.
The highlight of the festival is the first Sunday of July, when at exactly 1:00 PM, the faithful witness the "scinnuta", the descent of the patron saint's statue. In the late afternoon, following the solemn Holy Mass, the fercolo (processional float) leaves the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist to be carried in procession through the streets of the historic center. Many devotees follow the pageant in prayer, some walking the entire route barefoot despite the heat of the Sicilian summer. The day concludes with traditional fireworks displays.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival days animate Vittoria with a rich array of secular events:
The heart of the celebrations is the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist, the mother church of Vittoria overlooking Piazza Ferdinando Ricca. Built between 1695 and 1706 following the 1693 earthquake and consecrated in 1734, it is a fine example of Baroque architecture. It features a Latin cross plan with three naves marked by Corinthian columns, enriched inside with stucco, marble, and numerous paintings. Vittoria, a city founded in 1607 and today an important agricultural and wine-producing hub of Sicily, finds its most authentic popular soul in this festival.
The 2026 Saint John the Baptist Festival in Vittoria (Province of Ragusa) follows the traditional calendar: opening of festivities on the night of June 23rd to 24th with the Viagghiu and the first mass at dawn in the Basilica, and the climax on the first Sunday of July (July 5, 2026) with the scinnuta at 1:00 PM and the procession of the fercolo in the late afternoon.
As every year, religious celebrations will be accompanied by fireworks, concerts, and entertainment in the square. The detailed secular program for the 2026 edition, including musical guests and full schedules, is traditionally released in the weeks preceding the festival by the Festival Committee and the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist.
By car: Vittoria is accessible via the SS115 (Trapani-Siracusa); it is approximately 25 km from Ragusa and just a few minutes from Comiso. The nearest airport is Comiso Airport (Aeroporto degli Iblei, approx. 10 km).
By train: The Vittoria station is served by the regional Siracusa-Gela-Canicattì line.
Festivities take place from the night of June 23rd-24th until the first Sunday of July, culminating on the Sunday of the procession. Religious and secular events are free to attend.
The "scinnuta" takes place at 1:00 PM, and the procession in the late afternoon/evening. We recommend arriving early in the historic center, bringing water and sun protection, and following local traffic signs regarding road closures.
