About Lune d'Oriente

Lune d'Oriente is a nocturnal cultural itinerary that, during summer evenings, leads visitors through the alleys, caves, and panoramic views of the Cartidduni district in Modica, in the heart of the Ragusa province. Promoted by the Comitato d'Oriente and the Ente Liceo Convitto, the event offers guided moonlit walks that weave together art, history, music, and local flavors, with a final stop at the Convent of Sant'Anna and San Calogero. An immersive journey into the memory of the eastern side of this baroque city.

An emotional journey through the alleys of Cartidduni

Lune d'Oriente is a cultural event dedicated to rediscovering the Cartidduni district, the eastern part of the historic center of Modica, in the heart of the Ragusa province and the Iblean plateau. Established in 2023 by the Comitato d'Oriente and the Ente Liceo Convitto, in collaboration with numerous local cultural associations and ANCoS Aps Ragusa, the event offers a series of guided night walks that wind through alleys, stairways, caves, and panoramic viewpoints illuminated by the moonlight.

Art, history, music, and flavors

The tours, lasting about two hours, depart from Piazzale Falcone Borsellino and take participants along a route that combines art, history, music, and gastronomy. The path crosses evocative corners of the district and culminates at the Convent of Sant'Anna and San Calogero, where one can admire a precious 17th-century wooden crucifix and the recently restored mummies kept in the sacred building. Along the way, there are light installations, musical moments, and tastings of typical Modican products offered by local sponsors.

Modica and the nocturnal charm of the baroque city

A UNESCO World Heritage site for its baroque architecture, Modica reveals an unprecedented and intimate side during this event: that of the working-class Cartidduni district, made of houses carved into the rock, hidden courtyards, and ancient memories. Walking in the dark, guided only by the moonlight and the voices of the storytellers, allows you to rediscover the authentic and spiritual dimension of a place often off the traditional tourist circuits.

Growing success

The first editions recorded a large turnout, with about a thousand participants in total, confirming the value of a project that combines heritage enhancement, neighborhood cohesion, and tourism promotion of the Iblean territory. The organizers have announced their intention to further expand the cultural and tourist offerings in future editions.

How to participate

Participation in the walks is by reservation only, given the guided nature and limited number of spots. It is recommended to wear comfortable shoes suitable for paths with ancient and sloping pavement. For information and reservations, including via WhatsApp, you can contact the organizers of the Comitato d'Oriente.
