The patron saint of Acerno, every August 7th in the heart of the Picentini Mountains

In the calendar of Acerno, a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants perched at 727 meters in the heart of the Picentini Mountains, in the province of Salerno (Campania), one date stands out above all others: August 7th, the feast day of Saint Donatus. It is the patronal feast, a time when the village fills with relatives returning from afar, devotees from neighboring towns, and visitors drawn by the mountain coolness and the atmosphere of an authentic village festival, not staged for tourists.
Saint Donatus was born in Rome towards the end of the 3rd century, served as Bishop of Arezzo, and was beheaded on August 7, 362. Tradition remembers him as the apostle of Tuscany, an evangelizer through prayer and preaching, and he is invoked as a protector against epilepsy. The saint's head relic arrived in the Salerno area in 1612 thanks to Bishop Barzellino; in Acerno, it is kept in a precious gilded reliquary bust in the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, while an 18th-century silver bust is carried in procession. Saint Donatus is not only the patron of Acerno: he is also co-patron of the Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, which is why the solemnity often draws the presence of the Archbishop, who leads the people of Acerno in their tribute of faith to their saint.
The patronal day begins very early, with masses held in the Co-cathedral of Saint Donatus and the brass band touring the streets of the historic centerโa musical wake-up call that is as much a part of the ritual as the religious services. The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession: the saint's bust travels through the village accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, the band, and a crowd singing and praying along the route. Upon the saint's return to the church, the festival shifts gears, giving way to the secular celebrations.
Alongside the religious program, the Festival Committee puts together a popular lineup that has grown significantly in recent years. In 2024, for the first time in the festival's history, the celebrations were extended to four days, from August 6th to 9th, featuring the Cittร di Montecorvino Rovella band, the musical tour of the Juppa Vitale association, traditional fireworks, and concerts on Via Murge by beloved Campania artists like Andrea Sannino and Tony Tammaro, in addition to the traditional lottery drawing. During the main days, the fair fills the village streets with about one hundred and fifty exhibitors arriving from across the region: it is one of the most popular markets of the Picentini summer.
The architectural centerpiece of the festival is the co-cathedral, whose first stone was laid in 1575: a Latin cross plan, pillars instead of columns, a very high central nave, and a dome enriched in the 18th century with stucco, frescoes, and a Baroque altar. The 1980 earthquake severely damaged it, and restoration work continued for years. On August 6, 2005, the eve of the feast, the three bronze portals were inaugurated: in the center, Saint Donatus preaching to the crowd, overlooked by Mount Accellica and the Madonna delle Grazie; on the left, Saint Leo the Great, to whom tradition attributes the establishment of the Diocese of Acerno in 444; on the right, the bee with the hive, an allegory of the industriousness of the people of Acerno.
Acerno stretches out in the upper Tusciano valley, surrounded by beech forests, chestnut groves, and maple woods that give the village its name and have fueled an economy based on livestock and forest products for centuries. Attending the patronal feast also means rediscovering this mountain pantry at the table: cheeses, cured meats, chestnuts, mushrooms, vegetables, and dishes of the Picentini cuisine, offered at food stalls and local restaurants. Those arriving from the Salerno coast, just over an hour away, discover a different side of Campania, green and cool even in the middle of August.
The Saint Donatus Patronal Feast is an annual event in the Municipality of Acerno, in the province of Salerno, and its liturgical date is fixed: August 7th, the anniversary of the saint's martyrdom. However, at the end of July 2026, we found no source publishing the calendar of secular festivities, the duration of the edition, or the names of the expected artists. For this reason, the entry provides an indicative date rather than a program: we prefer not to anticipate unverified information.
The final program is usually released a few days before the festivities via the Festival Committee's poster, the parish, and the local Salerno press. Those planning a trip can contact the Municipality of Acerno to verify dates and traffic ordinances.
Acerno can be reached by car along the regional road 164/b, which connects the village to Montecorvino Rovella and the Irpinian side of the Picentini Mountains; from Salerno, public transport is provided by Sita Sud buses. During the festival days, the historic center is closed to traffic at times: it is advisable to leave your car in the areas indicated at the entrance to the village and respect the municipal ordinances issued by the Festival Committee.
Participation in liturgies, the procession, square concerts, and the fair is free. You only spend money at the food stalls, among the market booths, and for the festival lottery tickets.
At 727 meters above sea level, August evenings can be cool: a light sweatshirt is more than useful. Comfortable shoes are necessary because the village alleys are on a slope. Those wishing to stay for several days can find accommodation in the agritourisms of the Picentini Mountains and on the Salerno coast, about an hour away by car.
