The patron saint of Marciana Marina celebrated with a sea procession and pyromusical fireworks over the bay
The Saint Clare Patronal Feast is the most cherished summer event in Marciana Marina, a charming seaside town on the northern coast of the Island of Elba, in the province of Livorno (Tuscany). Every year, on August 11th and 12th, the village gathers around its protector, Saint Clare of Assisi, in a celebration that weaves religious tradition with popular festivities and entertainment.
Saint Clare of Assisi (c. 1193–1253), a collaborator of Saint Francis and founder of the Poor Clares, has been the patron saint of Marciana Marina for centuries. A local curiosity explains the dual date of the feast: the seafaring community traditionally celebrated the Saint on August 12th with grand fireworks, and when the Church set the liturgical memorial for August 11th, the day of her passing, the town decided to keep both days. Thus, August 11th remains dedicated to devotion and the procession, while August 12th is the evening for the pyromusical spectacle.
The most moving moment is the night-time procession on the evening of August 11th. From the parish church of Saint Clare of Assisi, the statue of the Saint is carried on shoulders through the village streets down to the waterfront, accompanied by praying faithful and the notes of the Filarmonica Elbana Giuseppe Pietri. Upon reaching the harbor, the procession transforms: the statue is embarked and escorted by a fleet of boats into the bay toward the Madonnina point, creating a unique scene of lights and reflections on the water.
On the evening of August 12th, the Marciana Marina waterfront fills up to witness the famous pyromusical fireworks display, managed for years by the Pyroitaly firm. It is the climax of the festival: light shows, sounds, and colors synchronized to music illuminate the bay and the characteristic medieval watchtower, while the entire town and numerous summer tourists crowd the shore. Afterward, the party continues with music and DJ sets until late at night.
Throughout the festivities, Piazza Bonanno hosts a food stand run by local associations, featuring Elban specialties and local products, accompanied by evening market stalls. Experiencing the Saint Clare festival means discovering the authentic soul of one of Elba's most beautiful villages, amidst faith, sea, and conviviality in the heart of the Tuscan summer.
The 2026 Saint Clare Patronal Feast takes place in Marciana Marina on August 11th and 12th, honoring the tradition that has always linked the village to its protector. August 11th is the day of devotion, with the Solemn Holy Mass and the evocative evening procession on land and sea, while August 12th is the evening of the pyromusical show that lights up the bay. On both days, the town enjoys the festive atmosphere with food stands and music on the waterfront.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the times of the celebrations and any musical schedule, will be published by the Municipality of Marciana Marina in the weeks leading up to the feast.
