The patronal feast of the Sant'Antonio district, featuring religious rites and a secular program
In Pontecagnano Faiano, a town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Sele plain, the Saint Anthony of Padua Festival is much more than a liturgical recurrence: it is the moment when the entire Sant'Antonio district recognizes itself as a community. Centered around the parish dedicated to the Saint of Padua, the days surrounding June 13th are filled with a busy calendar of events that alternates ancient rites, moments of popular piety, and open-air evening entertainment.
The district, which has grown along the roads descending toward the coast, experiences these days with participation involving entire families, confraternities, pall-bearers, and committees. Festive lights trace the procession route, market stalls line the sidewalks, and the marching band marks the passage from one part of the festival to the next with its music.
Spiritual preparation begins several days before the feast, with evening celebrations that bring the statue and the Saint's relic to various points of the district: a form of itinerant devotion that brings the festival to the homes before it reaches the square.
The central rites follow. The blessing of the pall-bearers' habits effectively opens the festivities: they are the ones who, on their shoulders, carry the statue through the streets of the neighborhood. The vigil mass is traditionally presided over by a bishop and serves as an occasion for the administration of confirmations to the parish youth.
The Saint's day is the most intense. From the early morning hours, the distribution of blessed bread takes place between the New Church and the Old Church, a gesture recalling the ancient bond between Saint Anthony and charity toward the poor. Services follow one after another until the Solemn Mass in the mid-morning, featuring the blessing of mothers and children. In the afternoon, the parish procession traverses the district and concludes with a final liturgical celebration.
Alongside the religious aspect runs a secular program organized by the committee and the parish, which fills the evenings and transforms the space in front of the church into a small stage. The ingredients repeat year after year:
As in every patronal feast in Campania, food is part of the ritual. Along the procession route and around the performance area, stalls selling fairground sweets line up: nougat, peanuts, brittle, taralli, and fried pastries. There is no shortage of kiosks with sandwiches and specialties of Salernitan cuisine, eaten standing up between one celebration and the next.
The Saint Anthony of Padua Festival in Pontecagnano Faiano is an excellent example of how, in Campania, the patronal feast remains a social event before it is a tourist one. There is no spectacle manufactured for visitors: those arriving from outside witness true devotion, made of handed-down gestures, while finding evenings open to everyone. For those staying on the Salernitan coast or visiting the nearby Eco-Archaeological Park, it is a direct way to connect with local life.
In 2026, the festivities in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua in Pontecagnano Faiano opened on Monday, June 8th, and concluded on Sunday, June 14th, with the liturgical day of the Saint falling on Saturday the 13th. The formula combined, as per the tradition of the Sant'Antonio district, a highly structured religious component and an evening secular program.
Spiritual preparation began on Monday, June 8th, at 7:00 PM, with a stop at Via Vespucci 54 where mass was celebrated and the statue and relic of the Saint were displayed. On Thursday, June 11th, also at 7:00 PM, the blessing of the pall-bearers' habits took place, the rite that symbolically entrusts the statue to those who will carry it on their shoulders. On Friday, June 12th, at the same time, auxiliary bishop Alfonso Raimo presided over the vigil mass, administering confirmations.
On Saturday, June 13th, the day of the feast, the morning was marked by the distribution of blessed bread between the New Church and the Old Church, with religious services every hour from 7:00 to 10:00 AM, and at 11:00 AM, the Solemn Mass with the blessing of mothers and children. At 5:00 PM, the parish procession departed, concluding with a final liturgical celebration.
On Friday, June 12th, at 9:00 PM, the second "Giuseppe Chiancone" Memorial took place, followed by a performance by the folk group I Valcalore. On Saturday the 13th, also at 9:00 PM, the customary auction in honor of Saint Anthony was held, with the evening continuing with performances by dance schools promoted by "Canto per te" and the A.S.D. Fitness Latino Dance 2.0 by Max and Stefania Citro. On Sunday, June 14th, the 9:00 PM religious auction served as a prologue to the musical show "Ibiza Live Time," the official party of Radio Ibiza. Throughout the festivities, the district streets were accompanied by roaming performances by the City of Salerno Marching Band.
The festivities are concentrated in the Sant'Antonio district of Pontecagnano Faiano (SA), around the parish dedicated to the Saint, between the New Church and the Old Church. The procession travels through the streets of the neighborhood.
Religious celebrations and open-air evening shows are free to attend. Devotional auctions operate on a voluntary donation basis.
