The festival of the patron saint of animals, featuring the blessing of livestock and agricultural machinery in San Cataldo
The Saint Anthony Abbot Festival is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in San Cataldo, a town in the province of Caltanissetta, deep in the Sicilian interior. Celebrated around January 17th, the saint's liturgical day, the festival is rooted in rural culture and popular devotion to Saint Anthony Abbot, venerated as the protector of domestic animals, livestock, and field labor. The focal point of the festivities is the historic Sant'Antonio district and its Carmelo church, where the community has gathered for generations during these winter days.
In the days leading up to the festival, the district church hosts the preparatory triduum: each evening, the Eucharistic celebration is preceded by the recitation of the "Coroncina di Lode" in honor of Saint Anthony Abbot and the prayer of the Holy Rosary. It is a moment of reflection that prepares the community for the solemn day.
The day of the festival is greeted at noon by the firing of cannons and the festive sound of bells ringing throughout the city. In the afternoon, a Solemn Mass is celebrated, attended by city authorities, before the most anticipated and characteristic moment.
The heart of the tradition is the blessing of animals and agricultural machinery, which takes place in the afternoon in Piazza Sant'Antonio Abate, in front of the church. Dogs, horses, pets, and livestock, along with tractors and farming tools, are led to the churchyard to receive the blessing: an ancient rite, halfway between the sacred and the profane, which reaffirms the deep bond between the local community, the land, and the animals.
Since 2016, San Cataldo has been linked by a religious twinning with nearby Milena, a town that shares the devotion to Saint Anthony Abbot. The pact, desired by the mayors of both municipalities, strengthens a shared sentiment that unites two communities in the province of Caltanissetta in the name of the same saint, making the festival an event shared beyond city borders.
The festival is held in January, coinciding with the liturgical feast of Saint Anthony Abbot. It is an opportunity to discover the winter traditions of the Sicilian interior, far from the most beaten tourist paths, and to experience a popular rite that remains authentic in the territory of San Cataldo and the entire Caltanissetta area.
The 2026 festival opened in the preceding days with the preparatory triduum in the Sant'Antonio district church, featuring the "Coroncina di Lode," the Holy Rosary, and the Eucharistic celebration. The solemn day was greeted at noon by the firing of cannons and the festive sound of bells.
On Sunday, January 25, 2026, in the afternoon, the blessing of animals and agricultural machinery was held in Piazza Sant'Antonio Abate, preceded by the Solemn Mass with city authorities. The day marked the start of the celebrations for the 120th anniversary of the church's foundation (rebuilt and rededicated in 1906), in a year that also commemorates the 1670th anniversary of the death of Saint Anthony Abbot. Rector Father Alessandro Giambra led the community on this celebratory path.
The festivities take place in the Sant'Antonio district, around the Church of Saint Anthony Abbot at the Carmelo, with the blessing of the animals in Piazza Sant'Antonio Abate, in the historic center of San Cataldo (CL).
San Cataldo is located a few kilometers from Caltanissetta, along the state road and the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Caltanissetta exit). The most convenient train station is Caltanissetta Centrale, connected by a short drive. It is easily reached by car from the provincial capital.
Participation in the celebrations and the blessing of the animals is free and open to everyone.
