The patron saint festival of animals, blending faith, blessed fire, pomegranates, and porchetta in the heart of the Marsica region
Every year, around January 17th, the village of Cerchio in the province of L'Aquila celebrates Saint Anthony Abbot, the protector of domestic animals, farmers, and the rural world. It is one of the most heartfelt events for the Marsica community, where religious devotion intertwines with conviviality and gastronomy, drawing locals, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The symbolic heart of the festival is the blessing of the fire, an element linked to the hermit saint, alongside the blessing of animals and agricultural machinery brought by farmers to the church. Beyond the rituals, there is the culinary tradition: the Pomegranate Festival, featuring boiled pomegranates distributed alongside blessed bread rolls, and porchetta, the star of the communal dinners held in the square. The free distribution of bread and pomegranates is the most anticipated moment, a genuine gesture of community and sharing.
The festivities open with a novena and traditional firecrackers announcing the event. During the festival days, there are solemn masses, traditional dinners in the square animated by local bands, and activities for children. The main day features a solemn mass, a procession accompanied by a brass band, blessings, children's workshops, the 'pupazza' dance, a lottery draw, a band concert, and a closing fireworks display.
Nestled at over 800 meters above sea level on the edge of the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, the Municipality of Cerchio is a small village in the Abruzzo hinterland overlooking the Fucino plain. Its history dates back to Roman times, and it preserves churches and a civic museum that tell the story of its rural identity. The Saint Anthony Abbot Festival is a symbol of this deep bond with the land and traditions, renewed by the commitment of local associations, the organizing committee, the parish, and the Alpini Group.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival in Cerchio opened with the novena on January 9, announced by firecrackers and church bells, continuing from January 15 to 18. The first few days featured solemn masses and traditional dinners in the square enlivened by local musical groups.
The main day on January 18 featured an exhibition of drawings by children from the Fontamara Comprehensive Institute, the arrival of the brass band, a solemn mass, the procession, and the blessing of the fire, agricultural machinery, animals, bread, and pomegranates. This was followed by children's workshops, the free distribution of bread and pomegranates, the 'pupazza' dance, a lottery draw, a band concert, and a final fireworks display. The event was organized by the Parish of Saints John and Paul, the festival committee, the Universitas Circuli Cultural Association, and the Cerchio section of the Alpini Group.
Cerchio is located in the Marsica region, in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo). By car, take the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, exit at Aielli-Celano, and continue towards the village. The nearest train station is Celano-Ovindoli on the Rome-Pescara-Sulmona line.
The festivities take place around January 17th, the liturgical feast of Saint Anthony Abbot, with a novena in the preceding days and the main day dedicated to the procession and blessings.
Participation in the rituals and the distribution of blessed bread and pomegranates are free. The dinners in the square and the festival food stalls require a contribution.
