San Rocco, Sant'Antonio da Padova, and Madonna delle Grazie in Ortona dei Marsi

In the heart of the Giovenco Valley, at the foot of Monte Parasano and over 1,000 meters above sea level in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the small village of Ortona dei Marsi (Province of L'Aquila) hosts its most cherished annual event in early September: the patronal feasts dedicated to San Rocco, Sant'Antonio da Padova, and the Madonna delle Grazie, celebrated on September 6th, 7th, and 8th respectively.
In a municipality of just over three hundred inhabitants, the feast is much more than a religious observance: it is a moment for the community to reconnect, for emigrants and the village's descendants to return home, and for the Giovenco Valley to rediscover its roots. Organization is handled annually by the Festival Committee, which raises funds and coordinates the program with the support of local associations and the parish.
The calendar weaves liturgical events with secular celebrations. The most solemn moment is the Mass on September 8th, followed by a procession that winds through the village streets with the statues of the patron saints, drawing the participation of the entire town. Alongside the sacred rites, a program rich in popular entertainment unfolds.
Ortona's evenings come alive with brass band concerts, music throughout the streets, musical performances, and dance nights. Recent editions have featured bands and ensembles from outside the region, alongside open-air cinema and tribute concerts. The grand finale is the unmissable fireworks display and the Ballo della Pupazza, the traditional puppet figure that, amidst sparks and fire, brings the festivities to a close late into the night.
The September feasts are also the ideal opportunity to explore Ortona dei Marsi and the Giovenco Valley: the stone alleys, the Church of San Giovanni Battista with its historic organ, the panoramic views of the National Park, and the hamlets scattered across the surrounding hills. A small yet significant village event that captures the authentic soul of the Marsica region and inland Abruzzo.
At the moment, the Ortona dei Marsi Festival Committee has not yet published the official dates or the program for the 2026 edition. The patronal feasts of this Giovenco Valley village traditionally take place in early September, with celebrations for San Rocco, Sant'Antonio da Padova, and the Madonna delle Grazie centered around September 6th, 7th, and 8th.
As every year, religious rites, the September 8th procession, brass band concerts, musical evenings, fireworks displays, and the unmissable Ballo della Pupazza are expected. The complete calendar will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Ortona dei Marsi (AQ), particularly in Piazza San Giovanni Battista and along the village streets.
By car: Ortona dei Marsi can be reached via the A25 motorway (Pescina or Cocullo exit) by heading up the Giovenco Valley. The village is located at an altitude of over 1,000 meters, within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
All patronal feast events are free to attend. For updated dates and programs, it is recommended to follow the official channels of the Festival Committee and the Municipality of Ortona dei Marsi.
