The summer event calendar of Pescina, in the Marsica region, featuring music, culture, sports, and traditions
Pescina Summer is the widespread festival of events with which the Municipality of Pescina accompanies residents and visitors throughout the summer season, from July to September. It is not a single event, but a choral program that combines music, culture, sports, spirituality, and popular traditions, spread across the squares, theaters, and trails of the village. Pescina is located in the Marsica region, in the Giovenco Valley, in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of inland Abruzzo.
The town is famous for being the birthplace of Ignazio Silone, the pseudonym of Secondino Tranquilli, one of the most important Italian writers of the 20th century and author of Fontamara, a novel set in these very places. The writer's memory, preserved in the House Museum and the Study Center dedicated to him, is the cultural thread that gives depth to the entire summer program.
The cultural heart of the summer is the Silone Festival, paired with the prestigious International Ignazio Silone Prize, which has brought great names of Italian music and prominent figures from journalism and culture to the Pescina stage. Alongside the Silone events, the calendar features the International Cardinal Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino Prize, dedicated to the illustrious cardinal linked to the Marsica region, whose ceremony is held at the San Francesco Theater.
The programming then ranges from theatrical performances, book presentations, and musical evenings to basketball and bocce tournaments, yoga sessions, walks in the historic center, and excursions on the surrounding mountains. There is no shortage of gastronomic and social appointments, such as the Beer Festival, and events dedicated to younger people like the Youth Games.
The bond with religious and popular traditions remains strong: during the summer, the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated, along with the Assumption festivities at Ferragosto, processions with torchlight parades, and, at the end of the season, the evocative Feast of Venus in September. Nature lovers can follow the Silone Trail organized by the CAI, a path that combines hiking and literary memory through the landscapes that inspired the writer.
Organized by the municipal administration in collaboration with local associations, the Pro Loco, and volunteers, Pescina Summer is designed to embrace all ages and enhance the identity of Pescina. Many of the events are free of charge and take place outdoors, in the historic center marked by the 1915 earthquake and skillfully restored. Each appointment is communicated with detailed information in the days leading up to it.
