The celebration of the mountain village of San Potito in honor of its patron saints
The Patronal Feast of San Potito di Ovindoli is the most cherished summer event for the small hamlet of San Potito, a mountain village in the municipality of Ovindoli, in the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of the Abruzzo region. Nestled at approximately 1,094 meters above sea level at the foot of the Monti della Magnola, within the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, the village comes alive in early August to honor its patron saints.
The devotion of the local community is directed toward Saint Potitus the Martyr, a young saint venerated in these lands, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Our Lady of the Snows. Religious celebrations form the heart of the festival: the solemn Holy Mass in the village church and the procession with the statues of the saints along the narrow streets of the hamlet, accompanied by traditional music, draw both residents and those who have moved away, returning to the village for the occasion.
Alongside the liturgical moments, the Patronal Feast offers a more festive and social side: food stalls offer specialties from Abruzzo and the Marsica region, while the evenings in the square are enlivened by live music, shows, and entertainment for all ages. The festival thus becomes an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of a small mountain community and welcome visitors.
San Potito is not just a place of devotion: its territory preserves important archaeological evidence, including the remains of a Roman villa and traces of a medieval castle built between the 11th and 12th centuries to control the valley. Immersed in the greenery of the Sirente-Velino Park, the village is also a starting point for excursions towards the Piano dei Santi and the Fonte Capo la Maina, in a typical Apennine landscape.
The Patronal Feast is part of the rich summer calendar of the municipality of Ovindoli, a renowned tourist destination on the Altopiano delle Rocche. Participating in the San Potito festival means discovering the authentic soul of the Abruzzo mountains, where religious and popular traditions continue to mark the rhythm of the seasons.
The Patronal Feast of San Potito di Ovindoli is scheduled from August 3 to 5, 2026, as indicated by the official summer events calendar of the Municipality of Ovindoli. The three days will follow the traditional format of the festival: the solemn Holy Mass and the procession with the statues of the saints through the village streets, food stalls with Abruzzese specialties, and live music evenings in the square. The detailed program with evening shows will be released by the Patronal Feast Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
San Potito is a hamlet of the municipality of Ovindoli (AQ), accessible by car via the A25 motorway (Aielli-Celano exit) and then following signs for Ovindoli and the Altopiano delle Rocche. The nearest train station is Celano-Ovindoli on the Rome-Pescara line.
The celebrations traditionally take place in the first few days of August, with the main event around August 4th.
Participation in religious celebrations and events in the square is free.
Being located at over 1,000 meters in altitude, we recommend clothing suitable for cool mountain evenings, even in the height of summer.
