The August cycle of patronal feasts between the village of murals and Aielli Stazione
Every summer, the small town of Aielli, perched at over a thousand meters in the Marsica area of the L'Aquila province (Abruzzo), experiences its most vibrant time of year with the Patron Saint Festivals. This is not just a single event, but a true cycle of religious and civil celebrations that, throughout the month of August, involves both the historic village and the Aielli Stazione district, enlivening the squares, churches, and alleys of the town made famous across Italy by the Borgo Universo mural project.
The religious heart of the event is the Patron Saint Feast, held in the second week of August with a picturesque itinerant procession between the church of San Rocco and the church of the SS. Trinità . The celebrations continue with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph, which takes place on the third Sunday of August in Aielli Stazione, featuring a procession through the town streets. Closing the devotional calendar is the Feast of the Cross on the last Sunday of August at Prati di Santa Maria, including a hike to the summit of Monte Etra.
In true Abruzzese tradition, the religious aspect is intertwined with conviviality. During the Patron Saint festivities, the Gnocchi Festival is held, while the feast of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph features the Pappardelle Festival. Food stalls, set up primarily in the squares of Aielli Stazione, offer the chance to taste typical Marsican dishes in a popular festive atmosphere open to both residents and visitors.
Alongside devotion and fine dining, the festivities offer a rich program of free concerts in the square every year. The musical evenings, hosted in the central Piazza Risorgimento in Aielli Stazione, attract audiences from across the Marsica region. The village, famous for its murals and the Astronomical Observatory with the Tower of the Stars, thus combines rural tradition with contemporary cultural vitality, confirming itself as one of the most original destinations in the Abruzzo hinterland during the summer.
Participating in the Patron Saint Festivals of Aielli means discovering a town that has successfully reinvented itself: from painted walls that tell stories and poetry to nights spent stargazing, from centuries-old processions to festivals of genuine local dishes. An authentic experience that captures the true soul of inland Abruzzo, blending faith, community, and hospitality.
The 2026 Patron Saint Festivals of Aielli confirm the traditional structure of the event, with the Patron Saint Feast in the second week of August (procession between the church of San Rocco and the SS. Trinità ), the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph on the third Sunday in Aielli Stazione, and the Feast of the Cross at the end of the month. Religious celebrations are accompanied by traditional food festivals and a program of free concerts in Piazza Risorgimento, organized by the 2026 Festival Committee.
The musical highlight of the summer is the concert by Fausto Leali, a historic voice of Italian song and winner of the 1989 Sanremo Festival, expected on Saturday, August 22, at 9:30 PM in Piazza Risorgimento in Aielli Stazione, with free admission.
The complete calendar of musical evenings and civil events is released by the Festival Committee in the weeks preceding the event.
Aielli is located in the Marsica region, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it can be reached via the A25 motorway (Aielli-Celano exit), just a few kilometers from the center. Aielli Stazione, where most civil events are concentrated, is served by the Rome-Pescara railway line.
The festivals take place throughout the month of August: the Patron Saint Feast in the second week, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph on the third Sunday, and the Feast of the Cross on the last Sunday.
Processions, food festivals, and concerts in the square are free to attend. Arriving early is recommended for the most popular musical evenings.
