The blessing of the animals and the charity polenta feast in the village of Tufo
Every year in mid-January, the small hamlet of Tufo di Carsoli gathers around Saint Anthony Abbot, the hermit saint venerated throughout Italy as the protector of animals and the farming world. The celebration takes place in Piazza San Rocco, in the municipality of Carsoli, in the province of L'Aquila, at the far western edge of Abruzzo, just a stone's throw from the border with Lazio and the Piana del Cavaliere.
At the center of the day is the blessing of the animals, an ancient rite rooted in the rural culture of the Marsica region: farmers, breeders, and families bring dogs, cats, and working animals to the square so that the priest may impart a blessing in the name of the saint. It is a simple and heartfelt moment that keeps a tradition handed down from generation to generation alive.
The convivial heart of the festival is the Saint Anthony Polenta Feast, offered by the Pro Loco Tufo di Carsoli APS. The entire village gathers around the steaming cauldrons, but the festival forgets no one: the polenta is delivered directly to the homes of the elderly and the sick who cannot reach the square. It is this spirit of solidarity that makes the Tufo festival special, far beyond the gastronomic value of the dish.
The feast of Saint Anthony Abbot concludes an entire cycle of winter events that brings Tufo di Carsoli to life between December and January. The calendar, organized by the Pro Loco, includes the inauguration of the nativity scene and the lighting of the Christmas lights on December 8th, the Christmas concert by the Armonia Corale Piana del Cavaliere choir in the church of San Giuseppe, the appearance of the Vecchione with traditional well-wishing songs, and the traditional tombola in the San Rocco hall, as well as a Christmas decoration contest that has been running for several years. The Saint Anthony festival is the grand finale, bringing the community back to the square after the holidays.
Tufo is a hamlet of Carsoli, a town with an ancient history nestled along the Via Tiburtina Valeria, the historic route connecting Rome to inland Abruzzo. Participating in the Saint Anthony Abbot Festival means discovering the most genuine soul of this mountain territory, made up of religious traditions, simple peasant cuisine, and a strong sense of belonging. An authentic opportunity to experience Abruzzo away from the tourist circuits, amidst the warmth of the people and the flavors of winter.
