The summer patronal feast of Castellafiume, blending devotion, local food festivals, and Marsican tradition
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Celebrations in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Anthony of Padua represent the most anticipated summer event in Castellafiume, a small town of about one thousand inhabitants nestled at the foot of Mount Aurunzo, in the upper Liri Valley and the historic Marsica area, in the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. Every year, in the second half of August, the town comes alive for several days of celebrations that intertwine the religious dimension with popular and convivial traditions.
The cult of Saint Nicholas of Bari has its roots in the very history of the village: the parish church dedicated to him, built in the medieval period by the Benedictine monks of Montecassino, is the symbol of Castellafiume and is surrounded by buildings dating mainly from the 16th to the 18th century. Alongside the figure of Saint Nicholas is the devotion to Saint Anthony of Padua, in a pairing that marks the liturgical moments of the feast. The central days are dedicated to solemn masses, the procession with the statues of the saints through the streets of the town, and the traditional auction of the saints, an ancient custom that involves the entire community.
Alongside the religious rites, the civil program organized by the Patronal Feast Committee offers numerous initiatives that enliven Piazza Alcide De Gasperi and other parts of the village. Among the most beloved events are:
The grand finale is entrusted to the musical fireworks display which, at midnight, illuminates the sky of the Valle Roveto and bids farewell to the end of the festivities.
The patronal feast is also the ideal time to discover Castellafiume and its territory: a mountain town at over 800 meters above sea level, surrounded by forests and a rich natural environment, at the gates of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and the Simbruini Mountains Regional Park. For the inhabitants, many of whom return to the town precisely for the summer, the celebrations in honor of Saint Nicholas and Saint Anthony are above all an opportunity for community gathering, capable of reuniting different generations around their roots.
The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the organizers: it is recommended to check the channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Castellafiume for updates.
The Celebrations in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Anthony of Padua will return to Castellafiume, in the province of L'Aquila, in the summer of 2026.
