The ancient sacred twinning between Rocca di Botte and Trevi nel Lazio in the name of Saint Peter the Hermit

The Rite of the Comparanza, also known as Comparatico in San Pietro, is one of the most unique and ancient religious traditions in Abruzzo. It takes place in Rocca di Botte, a small village in the Marsica region of the province of L'Aquila, nestled at an altitude of about 750 meters in the Simbruini Mountains, right on the border with Lazio. Every year, between late August and the first Sunday of September, the town renews a bond of brotherhood with nearby Trevi nel Lazio in the name of their shared patron saint, Saint Peter the Hermit.
The 'comparanza' between the citizens of Rocca di Botte and those of Trevi nel Lazio is the oldest twinning in history. Its roots date back to 1215, the year of the canonization of Peter the Hermit. Following a period of conflict between the two communities over the possession of the Saint's body, an agreement was reached that brought harmony, friendship, and affection between the two populations. Since then, the inhabitants of the two villages have recognized each other as children and descendants of a single ancestor, Saint Peter the Hermit, in a bond of spiritual kinship sanctioned by strict taboos: the prohibition of marriage between the two communities, as if they were blood relatives, and the obligation of mutual aid and sacred respect for the 'compare'.
The heart of the rite is the solemn exchange of visits. Around August 29th, the inhabitants of Rocca di Botte, accompanied by civil, religious, and military authorities, the Confraternity of Saint Peter, and the municipal banner, travel to Trevi nel Lazio, where they are welcomed at the city gates by the authorities, the banner, the confraternity, and the people of Trevi. Eight days later, on the occasion of the octave (the first Sunday of September), the people of Trevi return the visit to their 'compari' in Rocca di Botte with equal solemnity, amidst processions through the village streets and a solemn mass.
In the first ten days of September, during the Comparatico, the Panarda ritual is celebrated in Rocca di Botteโan imposing collective banquet of Abruzzese tradition in honor of the Saint, serving both a charitable and social function. At the center of the festival is the offering of the blessed bread of Saint Peter, baked in the original oven located at the birthplace of the hermit saint. The Panarda, with its traditional dishes, seals the spirit of sharing and community that drives the entire rite.
In the municipality of Rocca di Botte, in the mountainous hinterland of Abruzzo overlooking the Simbruini Mountains, the Comparanza is not merely a re-enactment but a deeply felt tradition that weaves together popular faith, community identity, and historical memory. The Path of Saint Peter the Hermit also develops around the rite, with the 'Anello del Comparatico' (Comparatico Loop) connecting Trevi nel Lazio to the Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Rocca di Botte. Those who visit the village during these days capture its authentic soul: that of a community that, for eight centuries, has guarded a pact of sacred friendship that transcends regional borders.
The 2026 edition of the Rite of the Comparanza does not yet have an official program published. Tradition places the celebrations between late August (the exchange of visits begins around August 29th) and the first Sunday of September, with the return visit to Rocca di Botte. Please refer to the communications from the Municipality of Rocca di Botte and the Confraternity of Saint Peter the Hermit for the definitive dates.
