Handmade gnocchi in Civita di Oricola, nestled in the Piana del Cavaliere

Every summer, in the charming setting of Piazza San Pio da Pietrelcina, the village of Civita di Oricola, in the municipality of Oricola (province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo), celebrates its signature dish with the Gnocchi Festival. For nearly three decades, this event has brought the Piana del Cavaliere village to life, attracting visitors from across the western Marsica region and the nearby Valle dell'Aniene.
The heart of the festival is the handmade gnocchi, crafted by local women using a recipe passed down through generations. A unique highlight of the festival is the chance to watch the preparation process live—a small display of artisanal wisdom before the cooking begins. Served with a rich mutton ragù, the gnocchi are the perfect embodiment of authentic flavors from the Abruzzo hinterland.
Alongside the main course, food stalls offer the great classics of Abruzzese mountain cuisine: the essential arrosticini (mutton skewers), grilled sausages, bruschetta, and, to end the evening, warm croissants. This genuine culinary journey has earned the event the prestigious "Quality Festival" designation, a mark awarded by the UNPLI (National Union of Pro Loco of Italy) to festivals that excel in authenticity and the promotion of local food and cultural heritage.
The Gnocchi Festival traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of August, coinciding with the historic Fiera del Cavaliere, an ancient gathering where farmers and breeders once met to trade livestock, seeds, and tools. This link to the fair gives the day a strong sense of identity, blending the agricultural memory of the Piana del Cavaliere with the evening's gastronomic festivities.
The evening is enlivened by live music and dancing, turning Piazza San Pio into a hub of joy until late at night. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Civita di Oricola, with the collaboration of local associations and the patronage of the Municipality of Oricola. It is an event for everyone, where families and passing visitors can discover the hospitality and flavors of this corner of the Abruzzo region.
