About Sailing Through Art

Every summer, to mark the National Pro Loco Day, Castellammare di Stabia turns its gaze toward the gulf with Sailing Through Art. The historic headquarters of the Lega Navale Italiana on Via Duilio transforms into an open-air gallery where local artists display their works against the stunning backdrop of the sea. Meanwhile, members' sailboats cruise the bay, reaching the Scoglio di Rovigliano, a small islet steeped in history and legend. It is a free, participatory event that celebrates art, the sea, and a deep love for the Stabiese territory.

An event that weaves together art and the sea

Sailing Through Art is the event with which the Pro Loco of Castellammare di Stabia, in the province of Naples, celebrates the National Pro Loco Day every year, an initiative promoted throughout Italy by UNPLI. The concept is simple yet effective: merging visual art with the charm of the sea, creating a dialogue between local artists' works and the landscape of the Gulf of Castellammare. The event was born from a collaboration with the local branch of the Lega Navale Italiana, which opens its historic Via Duilio headquarters and its members' boats to the public.

The open-air gallery on Via Duilio

The heart of the event is the open-air art exhibition set up within the grounds of the Lega Navale. For one day, the venue turns into a picturesque outdoor gallery where local artists exhibit works ranging from figurative to abstract and conceptual art. The exhibition path has the sea as its natural backdrop, in a blend of creativity and landscape that makes every edition unique. The public also plays a key role in the judging process: in recent editions, the artworks have been awarded prizes based on popular vote.

Sailing to the Scoglio di Rovigliano

The other soul of the event takes place on the water. Thanks to the sailboats provided by the members of the Lega Navale, participants can circumnavigate the gulf and reach the Scoglio di Rovigliano, a small islet at the mouth of the Sarno River, between Castellammare and Torre Annunziata, which is rich in history and legends. From the boat, you can admire the Stabiese coast from an unusual perspective, often at sunset, for a short excursion that combines sport, nature, and exploration of the local area.

Music, folklore, and conviviality

The day does not end with the exhibition and the sailing trip: the evening continues with folk songs and dances, group dances, and social moments that bring together residents and visitors. It is an opportunity to rediscover Stabiese customs, traditions, and heritage, in full alignment with the mission of the Pro Loco: to promote and enhance the local territory.

A staple of the Campania region

Sailing Through Art has become a small summer classic in Castellammare di Stabia, a city in Campania known for its thermal baths, shipyards, and proximity to the Archaeological Park of Stabiae. The event is part of the many initiatives with which the region's Pro Loco associations enliven the National Day, bringing the local community together on the seafront for a Sunday of art, sea, and celebration.
