About SailGP Rome

The Formula 1 of the seas is coming to Rome. On September 11 and 12, 2027, the waters off Ostia will host the Italian leg of SailGP, the international sailing championship featuring futuristic F50 flying catamarans capable of exceeding 100 km/h. The Porto Turistico di Roma will become the heart of the Race Stadium, with large grandstands set up along the coast. This marks the start of a three-year partnership between SailGP, Roma Capitale, and the Lazio Region, bringing world-class sailing to the capital's coast through 2029.

The Formula 1 of the seas arrives in Rome

For the first time, the capital joins the global SailGP circuit, the most spectacular sailing championship in the world. The event takes place in Ostia, on the coast of the Municipality of Rome, on September 11 and 12, 2027: two days of breathtaking races where the best crews on the planet compete just meters from the shore. Dubbed the "Formula 1 of the seas," the competition brings adrenaline, technology, and an international show followed by millions of fans worldwide to the Lazio region.

F50 flying catamarans: the most innovative sailing on the planet

The absolute stars are the F50 catamarans, foiling boats capable of "flying" over the water by lifting on their foils and exceeding 100 km/h thanks to sophisticated aerodynamic technology. On board, around thirty Olympic athletes, among the best sailors in the world, compete in short, intense races that are easy to follow even for those new to sailing. It is a spectacle that combines sport, engineering, and sustainability, as the SailGP circuit aims to be powered by clean energy.

The Race Stadium at the Porto Turistico in Ostia

The heart of the event will be the Porto Turistico di Roma, along the Lungomare Duca degli Abruzzi, where a true Race Stadium overlooking the water will be set up. The races take place very close to the coast, allowing the public to watch the catamarans duel directly from the beach and the grandstands set up on the shore. Ostia, the large seaside district of the Municipio X, transforms for the occasion into a stage on the sea just a stone's throw from the center of Rome.

A three-year agreement with Roma Capitale and the Lazio Region

The Rome leg is not an isolated event: it marks the start of a three-year partnership between SailGP, Roma Capitale, and the Lazio Region that will bring the championship to the capital's sea for three consecutive years, from 2027 to 2029. This marks the return of major international sailing to Italy following editions hosted in previous years in Taranto. According to administrative estimates, the economic impact will exceed 25 million euros, with approximately 68% of the audience coming from abroad.

Ostia transforms: coastal redevelopment

The arrival of SailGP brings with it a coastal redevelopment plan worth over 10 million euros, aimed at infrastructure, public spaces, and services. At the end of the event, the district will be left with a renovated beach of thousands of square meters, providing a lasting legacy for the residents of Ostia and the entire city of Rome.

A major event for the capital

Combining sea, sport, and entertainment, the SailGP in Ostia promises to be one of the highlights of Rome's major events calendar. In addition to the races, the Porto Turistico area will host public spaces, entertainment, and seaside activities, making for a weekend designed for families, sailing enthusiasts, and the curious. A unique opportunity to experience the Lazio Region and the Roman coast in a new and spectacular way.
