Night ultramarathon on the Ostia seafront, AiCS National Championship
The 6 Hours of Ostia is one of the most original events on the Lazio running calendar: a timed ultramarathon that begins at midnight and ends at six in the morning, as the sun rises over the coast of the Municipality of Rome. There is no set distance to cover; the winner is the person who completes the most kilometers in the six hours available, running continuously on a loop along the Lungomare Paolo Toscanelli in the Ostia Lido district.
This format, popular in the Italian ultramarathon scene, turns the race into a collective experience rather than just a competition. Whether you are chasing a personal best or simply want to challenge yourself against the night, all runners share the same circuit, the same aid stations, and the same soundtrack of crashing waves and footsteps on asphalt.
The track starts at the Pontile di Ostia, the iconic architectural landmark of the Roman coast, and stretches along the seafront for approximately 1,550 meters (the circuit is announced at about 1.7 km for the 2026 edition). The surface is entirely paved, predominantly flat, and closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the event, providing ideal conditions for racking up kilometers without interruption and for electronic chip-based lap counting.
The event features two formats. The 6-hour individual race is the main event, reserved for those who want to test themselves against the clock and the fatigue of the night. Alongside it runs the 6x1-hour relay, where teams of six athletes alternate every hour: it is the perfect entry point for those new to ultramarathons, as well as for sports groups and local running clubs.
In 2026, the 6 Hours of Ostia levels up: it has been designated as the AiCS National 6-Hour Ultramarathon Championship. The organization is a joint effort between the AiCS National Directorate (Sports Department), the AiCS Lazio Regional Committee, the AiCS Rome Provincial Committee, and Personal Best ASD, with the patronage of Rome's 10th Municipality. The national title is awarded to athletes registered with AiCS for the current year, with men's and women's rankings divided into age groups: 20-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and over 70.
The debut took place in 2025, when the race immediately joined the IUTA (Italian Ultramarathon and Trail Association) national calendar. The creator is ultramarathoner Massimo Minicucci, who wanted to bring a format already proven in other Italian cities to the Roman coast. In just a few months, the 6 Hours of Ostia has carved out a recognizable space among Lazio's ultramarathons, thanks to its unusual timing and the scenic backdrop of the sea at night.
Ostia Lido is the capital's maritime district, reachable in just over half an hour from the historic center. The seafront, with its pier stretching into the Tyrrhenian Sea, its beach clubs, and the nearby archaeological remains of Ostia Antica, offers the race a setting that blends sport, city life, and landscape. For spectators, the loop format is a major advantage: you can follow the competitors from a single point, watching them pass by dozens of times throughout the night.
For its second edition, the 6 Hours of Ostia has been designated as the AiCS National 6-Hour Ultramarathon Championship. The organization brings together the AiCS National Directorate (Sports Department), the AiCS Lazio Regional Committee, the AiCS Rome Provincial Committee, and Personal Best ASD, with the patronage of Rome's 10th Municipality.
The circuit, announced at approximately 1.7 km, starts at the Pontile di Ostia and runs along the Lungomare Paolo Toscanelli on flat asphalt, entirely closed to traffic. The race runs from midnight to six in the morning, with aid stations along the course and chip timing.
By train: Roma-Lido railway (Metromare line) from Rome Porta San Paolo/Piramide, get off at Lido Centro or Stella Polare, just a few minutes' walk from the pier. By car: via del Mare or via Cristoforo Colombo from the Grande Raccordo Anulare; please note the closures of Lungomare Paolo Toscanelli on the night of the race. By plane: Rome Fiumicino Airport is approximately 15 km away.
