The Potato Festival in the village of Ostia Antica

Every autumn, the charming village of Ostia Antica, nestled between the famous Archaeological Park and the Castle of Julius II on the outskirts of Rome, hosts the Potato Festival. The event, which began a few years ago and has grown with each edition, has become a beloved fixture for residents of the Roman coast and visitors alike who come to explore this corner of history in the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region. The beating heart of the event is the area around the Al Bajniero restaurant on Via Felice Caronni, just a few steps from the excavations and the village walls.

The potato, the absolute star

A humble and generous ingredient, the potato becomes the raw material for an entire popular menu here. The food stalls offer the great classics of Roman home cooking and much more:

• Handmade gnocchi, served with meat sauce, tomato sauce, or boscaiola style;
• Potato timballo with ham and melted mozzarella;
• Croquettes and crispy French fries;
• Grilled meat and vegetables;

Past editions have featured live concerts, tributes to Italian music, dance evenings with "a dance for everyone," martial arts demonstrations (kung fu, karate, aikido), flamenco performances, and DJ sets. There is also a local craft market, a book and gift stand, an area dedicated to children's entertainment, and sports classes open to everyone, reflecting the mission of the organizing association.

The festival is organized by the Le Saline Sports and Cultural Association, often in collaboration with local village entities. More than just a gastronomic feast, it is a moment of community gathering: an opportunity to rediscover the village of Ostia Antica, stroll through its historic streets, and experience the authentic conviviality of a community coming together around the table. The event is usually held in October, with some editions moved to November.
