Forty years of snails and tradition on the banks of the Tagliamento
In Turrida, a small hamlet in the municipality of Sedegliano in the province of Udine, one of Friuli's most characteristic gastronomic traditions has been celebrated for over forty years: the Sagre dai Cais, the snail festival. Cais, as snails are called in Friulian, were once a humble food that fed farming families in the plain; today they have become the symbol of a festival that in 2026 celebrates its 43rd edition.
The festival takes place over four weekends in June in a large park overlooking the riverbed of the Tagliamento, the river that shapes the landscape of this part of Medio Friuli. Snails are served according to the traditional recipe, stewed with aromatic herbs and vegetables accompanied by polenta, but also in the international ร la bourguignonne variation. Alongside the cais, the kitchen offers crots (frogs), spit-roasted chicken, sausage, frico, local cheeses, and mushrooms, all washed down with Friulian wines and beer.
The evenings of the Sagre dai Cais are enlivened by aperitifs, DJ sets, dancing evenings, and concerts, with exhibitors of artisanal and local products. Among the most anticipated events is the motorcycle rally organized by the Free Rider's Spirits Moto Club, which attracts two-wheel enthusiasts every year, and the non-competitive walk A pas di Cai, which leads participants to discover the trails along the river. There is also an area for children with inflatables and horseback rides, and a charity raffle.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of Turrida with the support of the Municipality of Sedegliano and the work of dozens of volunteers. Sedegliano is a municipality in the plain of Medio Friuli, a land of ancient parish churches, neat countryside, and the great Tagliamento river, considered one of the few Alpine rivers in Europe still with a natural morphology: a setting that makes the Sagre dai Cais much more than just a gastronomic festival.
For 2026, the Sagre dai Cais confirms its proven formula: four weekends in June (6-7, 13-14, 20-21, and 27-28) entirely dedicated to Friulian gastronomic tradition, in the park along the Tagliamento riverbed in Turrida.
Food, beer, and the festival's most recognizable specialty, cais (snails) served stewed and ร la bourguignonne, provide the backdrop for evenings of music and dancing. On Sunday, June 7th, the square hosts the fifth edition of the motorcycle rally by the Free Rider's Spirits Moto Club.
Throughout all weekends: food stalls with snails, frogs, spit-roasted chicken, frico, and local products, children's area, A pas di Cai walk, and charity raffle. The detailed evening program will be updated on the Pro Loco of Turrida's social media channels in the weeks preceding the event.
How to get there: Turrida is a hamlet of Sedegliano (UD), reachable from the SS 463 Tagliamento state road and a short distance from the Codroipo exit of the A23/A4 motorway.
Admission: free. Food, kiosks, and bar are payable.
Accommodation: facilities in Codroipo, San Daniele del Friuli, and in the municipalities of the Friulian plain.
