The Salento bread festival in Melendugno, in the heart of Salento
Every summer, in the month of August, the town of Melendugno, in the province of Lecce, dedicates a festival to one of the most iconic products of Salento cuisine: the pucceddhra. This is the typical seasoned bread of Salento, a cousin of the famous puccia, stuffed or flavored with tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, olives, and, depending on the family recipe, capers, oregano, and seasonal vegetables. The Sagra te la Pucceddhra was born as a community celebration and transforms the town center into a large open-air banquet, where the aroma of freshly baked bread mingles with the notes of folk music.
The pucceddhra tells the story of the peasant culture of the land of Otranto: a simple bread, created to be practical and nutritious, which accompanied work in the fields and became a complete meal with just a few humble yet flavorful ingredients. At the festival, it is possible to taste it in its many variations, from the classic version with tomatoes and olives to richer ones, alongside other traditional Salento dishes and local wines. The event is an opportunity to rediscover genuine flavors and the ancient gestures of home baking.
As per the tradition of Apulian festivals, the tastings are accompanied by folk music performances, with the driving rhythms of the pizzica and taranta inviting people to dance in the squares. The evenings, characterized by conviviality, attract families, young people, and visitors vacationing along the Adriatic coast of Salento, including the seaside resorts of San Foca, Roca, and Torre dell'Orso, which are part of the Melendugno territory.
Included in the rich calendar of Salento festivals, the Sagra te la Pucceddhra is confirmed as one of the most anticipated gastronomic events of early August in the Municipality of Melendugno. Free admission, traditional cuisine, crafts, and entertainment make this festival an authentic experience for those who want to get to know the truest Puglia, that of the villages, folk traditions, and flavors passed down from generation to generation.
The Sagra te la Pucceddhra returns to Melendugno (Lecce) on August 7 and 8, 2026. For two evenings, the town center comes alive with stalls dedicated to the pucceddhra, the traditional Salento bread seasoned with tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, and olives, accompanied by dishes and wines from Salento cuisine. As per tradition, the festival combines gastronomic tastings and folk music, with the rhythms of the pizzica.
The detailed schedule of shows and musical guests for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: it will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Melendugno is located about 20 km from Lecce, in lower Salento. By car, take the Lecce-Maglie expressway and exit for Melendugno; the seaside resorts of San Foca, Roca, and Torre dell'Orso are just a few kilometers away. The nearest train station is in Lecce, which is connected by local bus lines.
The festival takes place in the center of Melendugno during the evenings of early August, starting in the evening. Admission is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls, at affordable prices.
This is peak tourist season: it is recommended to book your accommodation in the Melendugno area and its seaside resorts well in advance and to arrive in the town center a little early to find parking.
