The eggplant festival of Castri di Lecce
Marangiane in Festa is the gastronomic festival that brings Castri di Lecce to life every summer. Located in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region of Puglia, this small town celebrates the eggplant—called "marangiana" in the local dialect, which gives the event its name. Organized by the Pro Loco of Castri di Lecce, the festival takes place in Piazza Paperi and attracts thousands of visitors from across the region every year.
For five consecutive nights, food stalls offer a rich menu celebrating the versatility of this Mediterranean summer staple. Signature dishes include parmigiana in both red and white versions, eggplant meatballs, sagne 'ncannulate pasta made with eggplant dough, and classic bruschetta. To finish on a sweet note, there is the curious chocolate parmigiana, an original recipe that surprises even the most adventurous palates every year.
Authentic Salento traditions are also front and center: pittule, bruschetta, pezzetti di cavallo (horse meat stew) in tomato sauce, and grilled meats round out an offer designed for every taste. For those with specific dietary needs, a gluten-free stand is available under the patronage of the AIC (Italian Celiac Association).
Beyond the food, Marangiane in Festa is a true community celebration. Every evening, Piazza Paperi fills with live music, traditional folk songs, and dancing, including the famous pizzica salentina, with entertainment running from 8 PM until late at night. The event is a testament to the volunteer spirit of the Pro Loco and the pride of a small community that gathers every July to honor its rural heritage.
Reaching its 24th edition in 2026, the festival has become a staple of the Salento summer calendar. Celebrating the eggplant means honoring the agriculture and peasant cuisine of Salento, which can transform a humble vegetable into a feast of flavors. With free admission, Marangiane in Festa is the perfect opportunity to discover Castri di Lecce and the genuine hospitality of Puglia.
The 24th edition of Marangiane in Festa is scheduled from July 24th to 28th, 2026 in Piazza Paperi, Castri di Lecce. For five consecutive nights, the Pro Loco offers a menu entirely dedicated to the eggplant, featuring the specialties that have made the festival famous, along with some new recipes created for these dates. Stands open every evening from 8 PM, and admission is free.
