The yellow pepper festival in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the small village of Acquarica di Lecce, a district of the Municipality of Vernole in the province of Lecce, one of the most beloved and long-standing festivals in Salento takes place every summer. The Pepper Festival transforms the town's streets and squares into a large open-air courtyard, where the scent of peppers on the grill mingles with the notes of Apulian folk music. It is an event that combines taste, rural memory, and conviviality, capable of attracting visitors from all over Salento and the nearby Adriatic coastal resorts.
The first edition dates back to 1978, under the dialect name "Lu pipigiallu te Acquarica", and was born in conjunction with the festivities for Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, to which the event has remained linked. The festival has its roots in an important chapter of local history: for a long time, the cultivation and trade of the yellow pepper were the main occupation of the farmers of Acquarica. That product, sold not only in local markets but also in Northern Italy and abroad, contributed decisively to improving the economic and social conditions of the town, curbing emigration and allowing the growth of new generations.
The heart of the festival is naturally the pepper-based dishes, prepared by the skilled hands of the volunteers of the Pro Loco of Acquarica di Lecce. Fried, roasted, and stuffed peppers are served at the food stalls along with other typical farm-to-table products from the Salento countryside and a good glass of local wine. It is an opportunity to rediscover a humble and genuine cuisine, made of simple ingredients and recipes handed down from generation to generation.
The festival evenings are accompanied by live music, with concerts by Salento folk music groups, pizzica, and folklore that enliven the squares until late at night. The atmosphere is typical of Salento village festivals: outdoor tables, families, group dances, and a strong sense of community that makes the event authentic and engaging.
The Pepper Festival takes place in Acquarica di Lecce, in the Largo Pozzo area and the streets of the center, generally in the second half of August. The village belongs to the Municipality of Vernole, in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento and Puglia, a short distance from the Adriatic marinas and the Salento capital.
