About Sagra dellu Pizzillu

Every December 8th, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Orvinio celebrates lu Pizzillu: a rustic, unleavened pizza stuffed with chicory or broccoli rabe, sausage, and pancetta, served hot in the town square. From 12:00 PM, the Pro Loco food stand offers tastings paired with wine and dessert, while craft markets, folk music, and traditional performances bring the village alleys to life. A convivial day in the highest inhabited center of the Lucretili Mountains Park, in the province of Rieti.

A winter festival in the highest village of the Lucretili Mountains

The Sagra dellu Pizzillu is the gastronomic highlight that, every December 8th, transforms Orvinio into a small capital of Sabina country cuisine. The town of Orvinio, in the province of Rieti, Lazio, has just over four hundred inhabitants and sits at an altitude of about 840 meters: it is the highest inhabited center in the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park and is listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy. On the national holiday of the Immaculate Conception, the community chooses to share its identity through a humble, traditional dish.

What is lu Pizzillu

Lu Pizzillu is an unleavened pizza, rolled thin and baked until crispy on the edges and soft in the center. The filling follows winter traditions: wild chicory or broccoli rabe, sausage, and pancetta. At the stands, the focaccia is also offered in simpler versions, seasoned with olive oil, aromatic herbs, cheeses, and local cured meats from the Rieti area. It is a dish born from the domestic economy of the Sabina mountains, where the garden and the pig provided everything necessary, and which survives today largely thanks to occasions like this.

How the day unfolds

The heart of the event is Piazza del Comune, where the food stand managed by the Pro Loco of Orvinio volunteers opens at 12:00 PM. The tasting of lu Pizzillu is accompanied by water or wine and finished with a dessert. As this is an outdoor event in the middle of winter at high altitude, the organizers usually set up a covered and heated structure, ensuring the festivities are not dampened by bad weather.

The rest of the program develops around the table:

  • Craft markets along the streets of the historic center, featuring local products and handmade goods
  • Folk performances and traditional music bringing the village alleys to life
  • Convivial moments and activities for families in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere
  • Leisurely walks in the medieval historic center, dominated by the castle of the Marchesi Malvezzi Campeggi

Why it is worth the trip

The Sagra dellu Pizzillu is not a major national event, nor does it claim to be: it is an authentic, village-scale festival where the people cooking are the same ones serving you at the counter. This is precisely why it represents one of the best opportunities of the year to visit Orvinio, a town that remains quiet in winter but fills with visitors from Sabina, the Aniene Valley, and Rome on December 8th. The combination of lunch in the square, mountain air, and the landscape of the Lucretili Mountains Park makes for a perfect day trip.

The context: winter festivals in Sabina

In Lazio, December 8th traditionally marks the beginning of the Christmas season, and many villages in the province of Rieti take the opportunity to open markets and food festivals. Orvinio stands out because its celebration is not generic but tied to a specific local recipe, handed down from family to family. Visitors can easily combine the trip with visits to other nearby towns in the Rieti Sabina area, or head up toward the park trails, which are accessible even in the cold season when snow is not heavy.
