The medieval village of Collalto Sabino transforms into Santa's own village

In the heart of the Sabina region, at an altitude of about 1,000 meters between Lazio and Abruzzo, the medieval village of Collalto Sabino (Rieti province) transforms into the Santa Claus Village every year-end. The event, reaching its eleventh edition in 2025, has become a staple of the Lazio Christmas calendar, drawing visitors from Rome, Rieti, and across the region to one of Italy's most beautiful villages.
For the occasion, the ancient cellars, workshops, and stone alleys of the historic center are dressed in Christmas colors. Local artisans and producers open their underground spaces to offer natural cosmetics, panettone, nougat, legumes, herbal teas, and Christmas decorations, all locally sourced. The background music of Christmas carols and the notes of the bagpipers accompany your stroll through the decorated streets.
The heart of the event is Santa's House: in his cellar, little ones can meet him, share their wishes, deliver their letters, and take home a souvenir photo. The village is also populated by elves, face painters, magicians, musicians, and storytellers, while there is no shortage of giant wooden games, table football, and pony rides. For parents with infants, the Cuddle House is set up, a dedicated space with all necessary amenities.
The visit is also an opportunity to discover the heritage of Collalto Sabino: the evocative medieval castle overlooking the village, the ancient church of Santa Lucia, the ecomuseum featuring Bronze Age artifacts, and the hiking trails that climb toward Monte San Giovanni and Montagliano Sfondato. A perfect way to combine the festive atmosphere with exploring the Rieti mountains.
The event takes place over several days between November and December, with continuous hours from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission is free and no reservation is required. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Collalto Sabino, which renews the Christmas village setup in the Rieti municipality every year.
The Santa Claus Village is expected to return to Collalto Sabino (Rieti) for the 2026 Christmas season. At the moment, the Pro Loco organizers have not yet published the official calendar. Based on previous editions, the event will likely be held over several weekends between late November and December, with continuous hours from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and free admission. The detailed program with dates, markets, entertainment, and activities will be updated as soon as it is released.
By car from Rome (approx. 75 km, just under an hour), take the A24 motorway towards L'Aquila, exit at Carsoli-Oricola, then continue towards Collalto Sabino. From Rieti, the village is about 48 km away. During the event days, free shuttle services operate from the parking areas.
