A village Christmas at the foot of the Lucretili Mountains

The Roccagiovine Christmas Festival is the event that kicks off the holiday season in one of the smallest municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the heart of the Aniene Valley and the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park. With only a few hundred residents and a stone-built historic center overlooking the valley, the village streets fill with lights, artisan stalls, and the scent of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine for an entire weekend in December.

The festival stems from the union of two traditions: the feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari, the village's patron saint celebrated on December 6th with a solemn mass in the church dedicated to him, and the more recent Christmas market format, which has attracted visitors from Tivoli, Guidonia, Subiaco, and Rome itself in recent years.

Markets, crafts, and flavors of the Roman mountains

The heart of the event is the artisan market set up in the main square and along the alleys of the historic center: nativity scenes, ceramics, woodwork, handmade Christmas decorations, honey, cheeses, and preserves from local valley producers. Alongside the stalls, you will find food stands serving traditional Apennine winter dishes.

Children, Santa Claus, and workshops

A significant part of the program is designed for families: the Santa's grotto set up in one of the village spaces, creative workshops for little ones, and a children's puppet theater with readings and performances. It is the perfect type of event for a day trip with children, set in a cozy, pedestrian-friendly environment.

Gospel music in the Church of Saint Nicholas

Saturday evening is dedicated to music: after the community Christmas dinner, the Church of Saint Nicholas hosts a performance by gospel choirs, featuring traditional Christmas carols and African American spirituals. The building's intimate acoustics and the participation of the locals make this one of the most anticipated moments of the entire festival.

Nature: walking in the Lucretili Mountains Park

The festival also has a naturalistic dimension. Recent editions have featured a guided walk in the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park, which is dog-friendly and organized in collaboration with the Fidolandya shelter in Castel Madama—a way to combine exploring the park's winter trails with raising awareness about animal adoption. The route is suitable for casual walkers and ends back in the village, just in time for lunch and the markets.

Roccagiovine, a village to discover

Roccagiovine owes its name to the temple of Iuppiter Vicinus and preserves a medieval layout dominated by the baronial palace of the Marchesi Del Gallo. The municipality's calendar in the Lazio Region is marked by popular events throughout the year—from the Madonna of the Snow feast in August to the chestnut festival in October—of which the Christmas Festival represents the winter finale. Visiting the village in December means seeing it in its most vibrant state, when the community gathers for the patron saint's feast.
