In Rapone, one of the oldest festivals in Lucania, featuring cured meats, cheeses, and fairy tales
With over forty years of history, the Sagra della Soppressata e del Caciocavallo in Rapone is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted gastronomic festivals in Basilicata. Every August, organized with passion by the Pro Loco (local tourism board), it fills the historic center of the small village in the province of Potenza with aromas, flavors, and tradition.
The absolute stars are two local excellences: the aged soppressata, a symbolic cured meat of Lucanian charcuterie, and caciocavallo cheese with its stretched curd, prepared according to ancient recipes. Along the village streets, you can taste these products accompanied by homemade bread, artisanal preserves, and local wines, in a journey of taste that tells the story of the rural culture of inland Lucania.
The festival is not just about gastronomy. During the day, the village offers folk music, storytelling for children, exhibitions of typical products, and guided tours of the murals that, inspired by fairy tales, decorate the walls of Rapone, making it a true "fairy tale village." A familiar and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for discovering the hospitality of the Vulture-Melfese area.
Promoted by the Pro Loco of Rapone, the event is a regular fixture of the Lucanian summer, attracting visitors from all over the region. For those seeking an authentic experience, far from mass tourism, it is the ideal opportunity to savor the truest Basilicata.
The 47th edition of the Sagra della Soppressata e del Caciocavallo in Rapone is scheduled for August 10, 2026, organized by the Pro Loco. The date may be subject to confirmation by the organizers.
The detailed program will be announced in the coming weeks. Based on previous editions, the day will include:
How to get there: Rapone is located in the Vulture-Melfese area, reachable by car from the SS401 and from the provincial roads connecting Melfi and Alta Irpinia.
Tickets: entry to the village is free; tastings are paid for at the stands.
Tip: don't miss the evening walk among the fairy tale murals, which are particularly evocative on summer evenings.
