The food and wine and cultural route of the ancient Borgo Pianello of Muro Lucano
Muro Lucano is famous as the "nativity village", perched on the Lucanian Apennine mountains. In summer, its ancient heart, the Borgo Pianello, lights up and comes back to life thanks to Borgo InVita, one of the most anticipated food and wine and cultural events in Basilicata, capable of attracting thousands of visitors, many of whom are Lucanian emigrants returning from northern Italy.
For several evenings, the evocative houses of Borgo Pianello open their doors to host a food and wine route featuring typical products, tastings, and specialties of the Lucanian tradition, with a particular focus on cheeses and artisanal creations. Along the route, you'll meet artisans at work, stalls of local products, and experience the authentic atmosphere of a village telling its own story.
The festival is also about entertainment: groups of folk music, accordions, street artists, and street theater alternate on various evenings, animating the alleys. For families, there are children's entertainment services and stroller parking, indicating an event designed to be enjoyed by everyone.
Borgo InVita also offers guided tours of the "Gerardini" sites: the birthplace of San Gerardo Maiella, the Cathedral and Hypogea, the Pannuto Workshop, and the Baptistery. Organized by the Muro inVita Association, the event combines taste, culture, and spirituality, promoting Muro Lucano and the Marmo Platano territory.
For 2026, Borgo InVita is expected in August, continuing the trend of recent editions that have scheduled the event for the first few days of the month (the 2025 edition took place from August 1st to 3rd). The Borgo Pianello will once again come alive with the food and wine route, stalls of typical products, artisans at work, folk music, and street theater, accompanied by guided tours of the places of San Gerardo Maiella. The official dates will be announced by the Muro inVita Association in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Muro inVita Association in the coming weeks. Based on the established structure of the event, the evenings will include:
How to get there: Muro Lucano is accessible from the SS7 Appia and the Potenza-Melfi junction; it is about a 45-minute drive from Potenza.
Tastings: Free access to the route; tastings with food tickets available on-site. Children's entertainment and stroller parking are available.
Accommodation: Accommodation facilities in Muro Lucano and nearby towns; booking is recommended in August.
