About Sagra della Cipolla Rossa

The Sagra della Cipolla Rossa di Breme is one of the most beloved gastronomic festivals in Lomellina, in the Province of Pavia. For two weekends in June, the small village of Breme celebrates its Red Onion, nicknamed "la Dolcissima" (the Sweetest), a Slow Food presidium since 2020 and a De.C.O. product. The event, curated by the Producers' Association, combines onion-based dinners and lunches, fresh product sales, an artisan market, and guided tours of the village's monuments, especially the Abbey of San Pietro. An event that intertwines unique flavors and historical heritage in one of the most evocative corners of the Pavese region.

The Sweetest Onion of Breme

In the heart of Lomellina, in the Province of Pavia, the village of Breme has been celebrating its symbolic product for over forty years with the Sagra della Cipolla Rossa. The star is the Breme Red Onion, affectionately called "la Dolcissima" for its delicate flavor without a pungent aftertaste: since 2020, it has been a Slow Food presidium and is recognized as a De.C.O. (Denominazione Comunale di Origine - Municipal Designation of Origin) product.

Two Weekends of Taste

The festival takes place over two weekends in June. Friday and Saturday are dedicated to dinners, while Sunday also offers lunch. During the weekdays, there are evenings dedicated to pizza. On the table, the onion is featured in a thousand ways, from traditional Lomellina dishes to more creative preparations. You can also buy fresh onions directly from the producers.

Craftsmanship and Guided Tours

Alongside the gastronomy, the event features an artisan market on the weekends and a rich cultural program: free visits to the historical monuments of the village throughout the day and guided tours on Sunday afternoons. Don't miss the discovery of the Abbey of San Pietro, an early medieval jewel, and its crypt, testimonies of Breme's Benedictine past.

A Village That Tells Its Story

Organized by the Breme Red Onion Producers' Association, the festival is held in a fully covered area, ensuring the celebration can take place even in case of bad weather. It is a model of territorial enhancement: a small municipality in the Pavese region that, through an identity product, tells its rural and monumental history to thousands of visitors.

Sagra della Cipolla Rossa — edition 2026

The 44th Sagra della Cipolla Rossa di Breme will take place on the weekends of June 12-13-14 and June 19-20-21, 2026. Onion-based dinners on Friday and Saturday, lunch and dinner on Sunday, and pizza evenings on weekdays. Also planned are sales of the onion, an artisan market, and guided tours of the Abbey of San Pietro.
