The risotto festival in the first rice town of Lomellina
The Sagra del Riso in Sannazzaro de' Burgondi, in the province of Pavia, is one of the most representative festivals of Lombard rice culture. Lomellina, a land of rice paddies as far as the eye can see between the Po, Ticino, and Sesia rivers, makes rice not just an economy but an identity: it is here that Sannazzaro proudly claims the title of "first risotto town".
The gastronomic heart of the event is Piazzale Mainoli, where risottos are served in many variations: from the classic saffron to porcini mushroom, from champagne to pumpkin, and salamina, accompanied by grilled meats, sausages, side dishes, and desserts made with rice flour, all washed down with Bonarda wine. As an old Pavese saying goes, "rice is born in water and dies in wine".
Among the most anticipated events is the Chicco d'Oro gastronomic competition, which awards the best risotto of the year. The festival also hosts exhibitions on agricultural mechanization, displays of cereal products, conferences on Lomellina rice cultivation, and direct sales of local rice varieties, in a journey that combines gastronomy, tradition, and education.
Organized by the Municipality of Sannazzaro de' Burgondi and the Pro Loco (local tourism board), the festival combines gastronomy with popular entertainment, folk dances, and animation, confirming itself as one of the most cherished events in the summer calendar of the province of Pavia.
The 2026 edition, the 45th, of the Sagra del Riso will be held from June 19 to 21 at Piazzale Mainoli in Sannazzaro de' Burgondi. Three days dedicated to risotto in all its variations, the Chicco d'Oro competition, exhibitions on Lomellina rice cultivation, and direct sales of local rice varieties, with popular entertainment and folk dances.
The detailed schedule will be published by the Municipality and the Pro Loco closer to the event.
