Umbrichelli, the reunion, and the Middle Ages of Monteleone d'Orvieto
The Sagra degli Umbrichelli is dedicated to the signature dish of Monteleone d'Orvieto: umbrichelli, a long pasta rolled strictly by hand, a relative of the Umbrian umbricelli, served with traditional sauces. For days, the village's food stalls offer this specialty alongside other local cuisine dishes, in one of the longest-standing and most characteristic sagre (food festivals) in the Orvieto area.
The sagra is linked to the Rimpatriata, a tradition that since 1965 has reunited Monteleone d'Orvieto emigrants in the village: a grand community gathering that makes the festival a moment of remembrance and connection, where those who left return home to find relatives, friends, and roots. It is this blend of gastronomy and identity that makes the event unique in the province of Terni.
During the festival days, on August 16th, the historical procession, inspired by the Castle Statute of 1407, takes place with over four hundred costumed participants and the Palio del Carro, contested between the noble families of Conti di Montemarte and di Marsciano. The festival thus combines food, reunion, and medieval reenactment into a single, heartfelt Ferragosto (mid-August) event.
In 2026, Monteleone d'Orvieto is once again preparing for the Sagra degli Umbrichelli Fatti a Mano e Rimpatriata, traditionally held in mid-August. The festival is expected to feature food stalls with handmade umbrichelli, the historic Rimpatriata for Monteleone emigrants, and on August 16th, the historical procession with the Palio del Carro.
The exact dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. For updates, it's advisable to follow the channels of the Pro Loco of Monteleone d'Orvieto.
