The most beautiful flower carpet in Umbria
The Infiorata di San Luigi Gonzaga is one of the most evocative events of the summer in Città della Pieve, an elegant town in the province of Perugia, home of the painter Pietro Vannucci, known as il Perugino. Every year, on the occasion of Corpus Domini, the streets of the historic centre are transformed into an artistic path entirely made of flower petals.
The highlight is the night before the solemnity: the contradaioli (members of the districts) of the Terziere work tirelessly to create a floral carpet of approximately 900 square metres, which winds from Porta Sant'Agostino to the foot of the Cathedral, in Piazza del Plebiscito. The result is a spectacle of colours and scents that attracts thousands of visitors every year.
The event is not limited to the floral carpet: for over ten days, Città della Pieve offers a packed calendar of cultural, religious, artistic, and convivial events. Among the highlights is the Taverna del Barbacane, set up in the Orti del Palazzo Vescovile, serving typical Pieve dishes (snails, pici, wild boar with tarragon), alongside flower and plant markets, workshops, urban trekking, guided tours, shows, and live music.
The Infiorata is organised by the Terziere Casalino, one of the three ancient districts of Città della Pieve, which dedicates the event to its patron saint, San Luigi Gonzaga. It is a festival of identity that unites entire generations of Pieve residents and represents one of the most cherished events in the Umbrian regional calendar.
The 61st edition of the Infiorata di San Luigi Gonzaga enlivens Città della Pieve from June 11 to 21, 2026. The theme chosen for this year is 'Laudato Sì', inspired by Pope Francis's encyclical and the relationship between humanity and creation.
For over ten days, the Umbrian town offers a rich program of events, featuring the Taverna del Barbacane, flower and plant markets, workshops, and shows, leading up to the highlight: the laying of the floral carpet on the night between June 20 and 21, on the occasion of Corpus Domini.
Open to the public in the Orti del Palazzo Vescovile on June 11-14 and 17-20, with traditional Pieve dishes: snails with pizzico, wild boar with tarragon, pici, tagliatelle, gnocchi, and grilled meats.
The complete program, with times, workshops, and shows, will be published by the Terziere Casalino in the weeks preceding the event.
Città della Pieve is located in the southwestern corner of Umbria, near the border with Tuscany. By car, it can be reached from the Fabro or Chiusi-Chianciano exit of the A1 motorway. The train station is on the Rome-Florence line.
Viewing the floral carpet and outdoor events are generally free. The Taverna del Barbacane and some themed dinners are paid (booking recommended). For information: tel. +39 340 8505381, [email protected].
