The rabbit festival in the heart of Bassa Friulana
In Bassa Friulana, that plain gently sloping towards the lagoon of Grado and Marano, there are flavors that tell of a hardworking, agricultural land. In Castions di Strada, in the province of Udine, the flavor that best represents spring is that of cunìn, rabbit in the Friulian language, celebrated every year by the Sagra dal Cunin. Entering its 19th edition in 2026, the event is organized with passion and a spirit of volunteerism by the Pro Loco Maggio Castionese, with the patronage of the Municipality.
The heart of the festival lies in the food stalls, where rabbit is offered in numerous variations according to traditional local recipes: stewed, hunter-style, spit-roasted, fried. Alongside the star of the show is the most authentic Friulian cuisine – gnocchi, grilled meats, frico, spit-roasted chicken, and fries – accompanied by wines from the bar and the unmissable charity raffle.
More than just a festival, the Sagra dal Cunin is a small village festival that unfolds over an entire spring long weekend. The program alternates rock concerts, Latin nights, and group dances, motorcycle tours and cycling trips, entertainment for children, and moments dedicated to community memory. It's the classic formula of a Friulian festival: long tables under the tent, music until late at night, and that sense of belonging that only Pro Loco associations can preserve.
Castions di Strada is strategically located in the Friulian plain, a few kilometers from Palmanova, a UNESCO World Heritage star-shaped city, and the beaches of Lignano and Grado. The Sagra dal Cunin is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic Friuli, far from the usual tourist routes, where the village festival remains a deeply felt and participatory community ritual.
The 19th edition of the Sagra dal Cunin takes place from April 25th to May 10th, 2026 in Castions di Strada. For over two weeks, the town transforms into a large festival village, with daily opening of the food stalls, wine bar, and charity raffle, accompanied by a rich calendar of music, sports, and entertainment for all ages.
Throughout the event, the food stalls serving rabbit and Friulian specialties, the wine bar, and the charity raffle remain open.
Castions di Strada is accessible from the A4 motorway (Palmanova exit) and the SS352 state road. The nearest train stations are in Palmanova or Udine.
Free entry to the festival grounds. Food and drinks are paid for at the stalls.
Accommodation facilities are available in Palmanova, Udine, and along the coast in Lignano and Grado.
