The Sacred Representation of the Passion of Christ is one of the most heartfelt events of Holy Week in Cefalù, a jewel of the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Every year, on the Saturday evening before Palm Sunday, the town's evocative historic center becomes a natural stage: the main setting is Piazza Duomo, dominated by the majestic UNESCO-listed Norman Cathedral, while the action moves through the streets and alleys of the medieval village.

The story brought to life

The performance retraces the final days of Jesus' life with great philological care and deep adherence to the Gospel. The show begins with the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, welcomed by the crowd acclaiming Christ as King, and continues with the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. Scenes of the scourging, the crowning with thorns, and the ascent to Calvary follow, leading to the most poignant moment of the Crucifixion, before concluding with the announcement of the Resurrection. The itinerant procession is accompanied by marches and carefully selected musical pieces that amplify the solemnity of the narrative.

Two hundred performers and a community on stage

The event is brought to life by about two hundred performers and actors, mostly residents of Cefalù, who dedicate themselves to this great collective ritual every year. The organization is managed by the Centro di Cultura Polis Kephaloidion, under the artistic direction of Marco Falletta and the presidency of Massimo Portera. Under their guidance, the event has evolved over time into something beyond a simple performance, becoming an authentic shared ecclesial and community experience.

The Passion of Christ in Cefalù attracts hundreds of visitors from across Sicily every year, drawn by the emotional intensity of the event and the unique setting of the village. The appointment is part of a broader Cefalù Holy Week tradition, which includes the Liturgy of the Passion, the traditional Good Friday procession, and the solemn Easter Vigil celebrated in the Cathedral Basilica.
