The Apostle's martyrdom in five acts within the Arbëreshë village of Irpinia
Every year on August 25th, the small village of Greci—the only Arbëreshë community in Campania, perched on the hills of eastern Irpinia in the province of Avellino—transforms into an open-air theater for the Sacred Drama of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, the town's patron saint. The performance is the climax of the patronal feast and the Agosto Grecese, the summer program promoted by the Municipality of Greci under the Arbëreshë name Ghusti Katundit, meaning 'the village festival'.
The drama is performed in Piazza Caroseno, in the heart of the historic center, and is structured in five acts that trace the Apostle's journey in Armenia, the land he evangelized despite pagan opposition, where he ultimately suffered flaying and martyrdom:
More than a hundred people take the stage, including lead actors and extras—almost all locals—dressed in period costumes. It is a collective effort that involves the entire town, from evening rehearsals to the creation of costumes and sets.
The origins of the work are ancient: centuries ago, the drama was improvised by local actors, following a medieval tradition of popular sacred theater. Abbot Luigi Lauda (1824–1892), a poet and writer from Greci, composed the first written version in 1881. The text performed today dates back to 1913 and was published in 1941 by Greci emigrants in New York. This detail speaks volumes: the drama is the thread that binds a community scattered between Irpinia and the Americas, drawing the town's children back to Greci every summer.
Alongside the theatrical performance, the religious program of the patronal feast unfolds on August 25th, with celebrations in the Church of Saint Bartholomew and the procession of the statues of the Patron Saint and the Madonna del Caroseno through the village streets, accompanied by the faithful and the festive lights adorning the historic center.
The drama is not an isolated event but the grand finale of a broader festival. As part of the Agosto Grecese, the Municipality offers evenings of live music and cultural events designed for visitors, with the stated goal of generating new tourism to the village. Among the most popular culinary events is the Caciocavallo Festival, which celebrated its nineteenth edition on August 20, 2025, dedicated to the territory's signature cheese and traditional Irpinian peasant recipes.
Visiting Greci during the festival means connecting with a historic linguistic minority. Founded by Albanian refugees who arrived in Italy after the 15th century, the town is the only Arbëreshë center in Campania. It preserves its own language, place names, and a heritage of songs and customs that coexist with Catholic devotion. The Sacred Drama of Saint Bartholomew is today the most visible sign of this identity: a popular liturgy performed in the square, free and open to all, which every August 25th places the village at the center of the cultural map of the province of Avellino.
The Municipality of Greci has announced the dates for the 2026 summer festival via a public notice for sponsors published on May 28, 2026: Ghusti Katundit 2026 — Agosto Grecese 2026 will be held from August 15th to 25th, 2026. The administration promises a program of live music and cultural events designed to promote the Arbëreshë village and generate new tourism to eastern Irpinia.
The highlight remains the patronal feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle on August 25, 2026, with the performance of the saint's martyrdom: five acts, over a hundred actors and extras in period costumes, in Piazza Caroseno. The detailed calendar with performance times and other festival events will be released by the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the feast.
Greci is located in eastern Irpinia, on the border between Campania and Puglia. By car, it can be reached via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then continuing on provincial roads toward Ariano Irpino and the village. The nearest railway station is in Ariano Irpino, on the Benevento-Foggia line; from there, the final connection is by bus.
The performance takes place in Piazza Caroseno and admission is free. In 2025, the shows were held at 12:00 PM and 9:30 PM on August 25th. The schedule for the current edition is released by the Municipality of Greci in the days leading up to the festival.
