Three weeks of festivities, food festivals, and music in an Irpinian village at 730 meters
Montaguto Summer is the festival that every year, throughout August, gathers all the civil and religious events of the Montaguto municipality in the Province of Avellino, on the far eastern border of Campania with Puglia. The organization is managed by Pro Loco Montaguto APS, the local association founded in 2007 and registered with the national UNPLI board, which works in collaboration with the municipal administration, the parish, and the local confraternities. For 2026, the official calendar of Irpinian Pro Loco associations released by the UNPLI of Avellino indicates an unusually long period for a village of this size: from August 2nd to 24th.
Montaguto has just over three hundred inhabitants and stands at an altitude of 730 meters, on a rocky spur at the foot of the peak known as «La Montagna», along the ancient route that connected the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sides. It is an agricultural and pastoral village, surrounded by a 54-hectare municipal forest of oaks and cork trees, a pine forest, and two small lakes for sport fishing. On clear days, the view stretches to the peaks of the Daunian Sub-Apennines: this is the natural backdrop for the festival, which takes place almost entirely outdoors, between the main street, the squares, and the churchyards.
The religious program is the backbone of the Montaguto summer and is concentrated in the first half of the month:
In past editions, the calendar has also included extraordinary moments of great participation, such as the welcoming of the relic of Saint Pio with a procession and concelebration presided over by the bishop, followed by the peace candlelight procession in 2024.
The signature dish of Montaguto is cicatielli, fresh handmade pasta served here with tomato sauce, sometimes enriched with garden zucchini. Their festival, a fixed appointment in August, is accompanied by the rest of the local pantry: the cured meats that have made the village famous — flat pancetta, capicollo, Irpinian soppressata — and honey, the other historic production of this mountain corner. Tastings are often managed by local associations, such as the Confraternity of Mercy, and are held in the public spaces of the town center.
Alongside religious celebrations, the Pro Loco creates a deliberately diverse civil program designed for all ages. In recent editions — the 2024 poster documents this well — there have been soap bubble shows for children, the «CronoMontaguto» cycling time trial, brass band concerts and evenings with folk music groups, theatrical performances and readings, forest cleanup days, book presentations dedicated to hospitality and tourism in inland areas, open-air screenings, and treasure hunts for teenagers. It is a model of village celebration that focuses more on resident participation than on big names.
Montaguto Summer is not a nationally renowned festival, and that is precisely its appeal: it is a snapshot of how a community of a few hundred people brings together popular faith, peasant cuisine, and the desire to gather in the square for three weeks. For those visiting Irpinia in August, the village offers an authentic immersion into an inland, mountainous Campania, far from coastal stereotypes, with the advantage of mild high-altitude temperatures and a culinary scene that alone justifies the detour.
The 2026 calendar of events for Irpinian Pro Loco associations, published by the UNPLI of Avellino, lists Montaguto Summer from August 2nd to 24th, 2026, organized by the Pro Loco Montaguto APS. It is the longest period ever indicated for the festival and confirms the village's choice to gather all summer initiatives under a single title.
As of the writing of this sheet, the detailed poster has not yet been released. Based on the consolidated structure of the festival, the program is built around the fixed recurrences of the village — the Feast and Fair of Our Lady of the Snows on August 5th, the patronal feast of Saint Crescenzo on August 13th and 14th, the celebration of the Assumption at Ferragosto, and the Cicatielli Festival — accompanied by civil events organized by the Pro Loco, including music, sports, activities for children, and open-air evenings.
The program with times, locations, and guest names is usually published by the Municipality of Montaguto and the Pro Loco in the weeks immediately preceding the start of the festival. For information: Municipality of Montaguto, phone +39 0825 862014.
Montaguto is located on the border between Campania and Puglia, along the SS90 road of the Puglie. By car, the most convenient exits are on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway towards Grottaminarda or Candela, from where you continue towards Ariano Irpino and Savignano Irpino. The final stretch is a mountain road: in August, it is best to arrive in daylight, especially the first time.
The historic center is small and partially pedestrianized during the festival evenings; you can park along the access roads to the village. All event locations can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
The events take place in squares and public spaces and are free to enter. Only food tastings require payment, with tickets to be purchased on-site at the stands.

The village is at 730 meters: evenings can be cool even in August, so it is best to bring a light jacket. There are very few local accommodations, so it is advisable to stay in Ariano Irpino or nearby villages and book in advance for the days around Ferragosto.
