A rural thanksgiving to the Madonna del Bosco in the heart of the Monti Dauni
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the village of Panni, perched over 800 meters high in the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia (Apulia), one of the most evocative agricultural rites of the Apennine mountains is renewed every August 15th: the Procession of the Wheat Sheaves, also known as the Wheat Festival. It is the great thanksgiving of the farmers to the Madonna del Bosco, the patron saint of the town, for the recently concluded wheat harvest.
The festival coincides with the solemnity of the Assumption, on Ferragosto. To honor the Virgin, the farmers of Panni offer the "salme"—the local dialect term for entire sheaves of wheat—loaded onto creatively decorated carts. The sheaves are carried in a procession through the streets of the historic center, while donkeys adorned with wheat and participants in period costumes recreate the rural world of the past.
The day begins in the early morning with the reenactment of ancient "arts and crafts" and demonstrations of the harvesting phases, back when wheat was still cut by hand. Then, the parade of carts overflowing with wheat takes shape, accompanied by the unmistakable sound of the zampogna (bagpipe), a staple of Panni's musical tradition. The procession concludes with a cavalcade of horsemen, whose ride through the village streets provides the most spectacular image of the festival.
The cult is linked to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Bosco, built on Monte Crispignano a few kilometers from the town: according to tradition, a wooden statue of the Virgin was found in the woods by a shepherdess. Every year, on June 24th, the statue is carried in procession from the sanctuary to the Mother Church, where it remains until August 28th: a long summer devotional cycle that culminates in the Wheat Festival and the celebrations in honor of Saint Costanzo the Martyr and the Madonna del Bosco.
A true panoramic balcony overlooking the Cervaro valley and the Monti Dauni, Panni offers a compact historic center, sweeping views, and an authentic atmosphere of the Apulian hinterland. The Wheat Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of Apulia, far from the coasts, where Marian devotion and peasant culture still intertwine in one great village celebration.
The 2026 edition of the Wheat Festival of Panni has not yet been officially confirmed by the Municipality and the parish. According to tradition, the wheat procession is held every year on August 15th, the solemnity of the Assumption, with the offering of wheat sheaves to the Madonna del Bosco, the parade of decorated carts, participants in period costumes, and the final cavalcade of horsemen. The detailed program will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival.
