The hamlet of Sant'Egidio celebrates with fried cresciola and recipes from local housewives
The Cresciola Festival, part of the S. Egidio in Festa event, is one of the most beloved appointments in the hamlet of Sant'Egidio, in the Municipality of Montecastrilli (province of Terni). For over forty years, the community has gathered to celebrate a simple and iconic dish.
The absolute protagonist is cresciola, a fried flatbread from the Umbrian peasant tradition, prepared according to recipes passed down and guarded by local housewives. Alongside cresciola, the stalls offer other local specialties such as gnocchi, pork knuckle, and, in historical editions, tagliatelle and gnocchi with castrato.
The festival is not just about gastronomy: each evening is accompanied by free admission music and shows, in a convivial atmosphere that involves the entire community of Sant'Egidio and visitors from the surrounding areas.
The 2026 edition of S. Egidio in Festa - Cresciola Festival reaches its 41st edition and is held from August 24 to September 2 in the hamlet of Sant'Egidio di Montecastrilli.
For ten days, the food stalls will offer cresciola and other specialties of the local tradition, prepared by the village housewives, while every evening will be enlivened by free admission music and shows.
The detailed program of evening shows will be announced by the organizers shortly before the event.
