The carnival tradition of Ruvo di Puglia, blending local dialect, gastronomy, and the ritual of Mbà Bìose
The Ruvo di Puglia Carnival, or Rubastino Carnival, is one of the most cherished popular traditions in the town of Ruvo di Puglia, in the Province of Bari, in the heart of Puglia. It is not merely a costume party, but a true community ritual rooted in the town's rural and dialectal culture, drawing both young and old to the squares and alleys of the historic center every February.
The heart of the Rubastino Carnival is the figure of Mbà Bìose, an emblematic mask around which the entire event revolves. His story unfolds over several days: from visits to his dwelling, featuring tales and sketches in the local dialect, to the announcement of his death. The most anticipated moment is "L'agonìe da Mbà Bìose" (The Agony of Mbà Bìose), which precedes the final procession, as the community accompanies the character in his satirical farewell through the town streets.
A central role is played by the Ruvo di Puglia calzone (u kalzàun da Rùve), a gastronomic specialty that has become a symbol of the town's identity. Its parade, featuring tastings and theatrical performances in the local dialect, is one of the most popular events. Traditional seasonal sweets, such as chiacchiere, also accompany the festivities.
The Carnival concludes on Shrove Tuesday with one of its most evocative rituals: the announcement of Mbà Bìose's death, the setting up of the funeral chapel in Piazza Matteotti, and the masked funeral procession that winds through the town streets, accompanied by a brass band and local folk groups. The climax is the reading of the satirical will and the burning of the effigy, complete with confetti and musical entertainment, marking the end of the Carnival and the beginning of Lent.
Animated by the folk group Lapecheronza and supported by local associations and merchants, the Rubastino Carnival actively involves families and children, who often take part in the parades wearing costumes that evoke the ancient trades of Ruvo. It is an event that celebrates the local dialect, folk memory, and conviviality, confirming its status as one of the most important identity-defining events in the Puglia calendar.
The 2026 edition was spread over several days in February, from Shrove Thursday (February 12) to Shrove Tuesday (February 17). The program alternated the parade dedicated to u kalzàun da Rùve, the traditional calzone, with tastings and dialect sketches, and the days of "L'agonìe da Mbà Bìose", featuring visits to the character's dwelling and tales in the Rubastino dialect animated by the folk group Lapecheronza, with the participation of children.
The conclusion, on Shrove Tuesday, saw the announcement of Mbà Bìose's death, the masked funeral procession accompanied by musical groups, the reading of the will, and the traditional burning of the effigy. The event, promoted by the Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Ruvo di Puglia and the support of Confcommercio and local merchants, reaffirmed the strong identity value of the Rubastino Carnival.
The events take place in the historic center of Ruvo di Puglia, with Piazza Matteotti serving as the main venue for the celebrations.
