The traditional early December market in the heart of Molfetta
The San Nicola Market is one of the most traditional events on the calendar in Molfetta, located in the province of Bari in the heart of Puglia. It is held annually in early December, just before the liturgical Feast of Saint Nicholas on December 6th—a figure deeply revered along the Bari coast and universally considered the ancestor of Santa Claus. The market serves as the informal start of the Christmas season in the city.
The stalls occupy the streets of the city's western district, near the Parco di Ponente. The event is traditionally set up along Via San Pio X, Via Generale Saverio Calò, Via Michele Tridente, and Via Papa Innocenzo XIII, creating a route that winds through residential streets and hosts dozens of vendors every year.
The market brings together over fifty stalls, offering a diverse selection for the whole family:
The atmosphere is typical of Apulian street markets: colors, lights, scents, and the festive buzz of a community gathering for their first Christmas strolls of the year.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Molfetta through the Commerce Office and the One-Stop Shop for Productive Activities (S.U.A.P.), which publishes an annual call for applications to assign stalls to vendors. In the city's fair calendar, the San Nicola Market is joined by the Madonna dei Martiri Fair in September; these are the two major traditional events for Molfetta's street commerce.
More than just a fair, the San Nicola Market represents a moment of collective identity for Molfetta: an early December ritual that weaves together popular devotion, street commerce, and neighborhood life. For many locals, strolling through the stalls in the western district is the first true sign that Christmas is just around the corner.
The 2026 San Nicola Market will be held in Molfetta on December 3, 4, and 5, 2026, as confirmed by the official call for applications published by the Municipality for commercial operators (applications due by June 30, 2026). The event will take place in its traditional western district, near the Parco di Ponente, along Via San Pio X, Via Generale Saverio Calò, Via Michele Tridente, and Via Papa Innocenzo XIII.
This year, the market will once again bring together over fifty stalls, including food vendors, non-food retailers, and local association booths, offering the usual selection of local products, sweets, gift items, and Christmas decorations. The final ranking of stall assignments and the schedule for space selection are published by the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the event.
