About Rosengarten Schlern Skymarathon

The Rosengarten Schlern Skymarathon is a premier mountain running race held in mid-July in Tires al Catinaccio, South Tyrol. The spectacular course winds around the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) and Sciliar (Schlern) massifs in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. Featuring three distances—46, 36, and 16 km—with challenging elevation gains, the race starts in the hamlet of San Cipriano and finishes in the center of Tires. This sold-out event attracts trail runners from across Europe.

A skymarathon in the realm of King Laurin

The Rosengarten Schlern Skymarathon is one of the most captivating mountain running races in the Alps. It takes place in Tires al Catinaccio (Tiers am Rosengarten), a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, South Tyrol, nestled in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites. The route unfolds around two iconic massifs: the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) and the Sciliar (Schlern), the setting for the famous legend of King Laurin and his rose garden, which turns the dolomite walls pink at sunset (the enrosadira).

Three courses for every level

The race offers three distances, all starting and finishing in the Tires area:

  • Sky Marathon (46 km) — approximately 3000 meters of positive elevation gain, the flagship event reserved for experienced runners. Starts in the hamlet of San Cipriano (St. Zyprian) and finishes in the center of Tires.
  • Sky Trail (36 km) — approximately 1900 meters of elevation gain, an intermediate distance blending endurance and technical skill.
  • Sky Run (16 km) — approximately 770 meters of elevation gain, a shorter track introduced in 2026 to introduce newcomers to high-altitude running, starting from San Cipriano.

The highest point of the long course is the Passo Principe (Grasleitenpass), at 2610 meters above sea level, on the border with the Val di Fassa. The maximum time to complete the race is 10 hours.

An international sold-out event

Established in 2015, the event has grown into an internationally renowned competition. The 2026 edition was a complete sell-out with 500 participants from approximately 30 nations. The organization is managed by a local committee in collaboration with the Tires Tourist Association, supporting athletes from registration to the finish line.

Running in the Dolomites

More than just a competition, the Rosengarten Schlern Skymarathon is an immersive experience in one of the most iconic landscapes of the Alps. Alpine trails, pastures, mountain huts, and panoramic views of the Catinaccio spires frame a tough but unforgettable challenge in an environment that blends South Tyrolean alpine tradition with the Ladin culture of the neighboring valleys.

Rosengarten Schlern Skymarathon — edition 2026

The 9th edition of the Rosengarten Schlern Skymarathon took place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in Tires al Catinaccio, with a full house: 500 athletes from about 30 nations at the start of the three courses of 46, 36, and 16 km around the Catinaccio and Sciliar massifs, in the heart of the UNESCO Dolomites.

Ninth edition, three distances

The 2026 edition of the Rosengarten Schlern Skymarathon took place on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in Tires al Catinaccio (Bolzano), South Tyrol. The big news was the debut of the new 16 km Sky Run (770 m elevation gain), joining the two historic courses: the 46 km Sky Marathon (approx. 3000 m elevation gain) and the 36 km Sky Trail (approx. 1900 m). The event was completely sold out with 500 participants from about 30 nations, confirming its status as one of the most anticipated skymarathons of the Dolomite summer.
