About Rosari – Almabtrieb Lajen

Every first Sunday of October, on Rosary Sunday, the village of Lajen (Bolzano province) celebrates the Rosari, the traditional Almabtrieb: the festive descent of livestock from the summer pastures of the Rasciesa Alp to the valley barns. Around fifty animals adorned with flower crowns and pine branches parade through the village, accompanied by carts, vintage tractors, a brass band, Schuhplattler dancers, and stalls featuring typical South Tyrolean products.

The Rosari, the Almabtrieb of Lajen

In the small municipality of Lajen, a village in the Dolomites in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol), the arrival of autumn coincides with one of the most cherished South Tyrolean farming traditions: the Almabtrieb, the seasonal return of livestock from high-altitude pastures. In Lajen, this festival goes by the local name Rosari, as it takes place on Rosary Sunday, the first Sunday of October—a day of great religious and community significance for the village.

The descent of the herd from the Rasciesa Alp

After spending the summer on the pastures of the Rasciesa Alp (Raschötz), the herd returns to the valley in a festive procession. Approximately fifty animals—cows, as well as horses, sheep, and goats—are decorated with flower crowns and pine branches and parade through the village streets, accompanied by farmers, families, agricultural carts, and several vintage tractors. It is a moment for the community to give thanks for a grazing season that concluded without incident: traditionally, the most elaborately decorated animals are those that have "worked" best in the mountains.

A village festival of music and flavors

The Rosari is more than just a parade; the transhumance is the centerpiece of a true autumn festival. From the morning, the square in Lajen comes alive with a brass band, performances by Schuhplattler (traditional Tyrolean dancers), guest groups, and numerous stalls selling local products: cheeses, honey, local gastronomic specialties, and regional handicrafts. It is an ideal opportunity to discover the authentic rural culture of the Isarco Valley and South Tyrol in a warm, convivial atmosphere.

Why it's worth visiting

  • One of the most evocative transhumance events in the Dolomites, set against a spectacular autumn landscape.
  • Free admission and strong community participation from the people of Lajen.
  • A complete program featuring music, folk dancing, and tastings.
  • Deeply rooted in South Tyrolean farming tradition, showcasing authentic costumes and customs.

The Rosari in Lajen is the perfect event for those looking to experience the Dolomite autumn in its most genuine form, amidst tradition, nature, and South Tyrolean hospitality.
