The Herbstfeschtl am Schloss Velthurns (Autumn Festival at Velthurns Castle) is a beloved local event held every October in the gardens of Velthurns Castle, located in the municipality of Velturno/Feldthurns in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Organized by the Musikkapelle Feldthurns, the village brass band, the festival brings the community together for an authentic celebration deeply rooted in the traditions of the Isarco Valley.

The day's program

The festival follows a simple, heartfelt structure: it begins with the traditional Rosary Procession (Rosari-Prozession), a moment of reflection that precedes the festivities. Afterward, the castle garden transforms into a lively venue featuring seasonal autumn specialties and musical entertainment provided by the band. The event typically kicks off in the late morning, around 11:00 AM, allowing guests to enjoy the day outdoors in the manor's historic setting.

Velthurns Castle, a princely residence

The location is one of the highlights that makes this festival so special. Velthurns Castle (Schloss Velthurns) was built starting in 1578 at the behest of the Prince-Bishop of Bressanone and served as the summer residence of the Prince-Bishops until the early 19th century. Inside, it preserves exquisite Renaissance decorations—wood paneling, marquetry, carved portals, tiled stoves, and frescoes—including the famous Prince's Room (Fürstenzimmer) and the Chapel of Saint Catherine. Its garden provides the ideal setting for a celebration steeped in history and community spirit.

Velturno, the village of chestnuts

Velturno/Feldthurns is a peaceful village nestled on a sunny plateau above the Isarco Valley, famous for its chestnut groves and the Keschtn (chestnut) season, which paints the landscape in autumn colors. The Herbstfeschtl fits perfectly into this time of year, when seasonal flavors and rural traditions take center stage.
