About Riavulillo Festival

Every August, the village of Arola, perched nearly 490 meters high in the hills of Vico Equense, comes alive for the Riavulillo Festival. The star of the show is a small, hand-crafted smoked caciocavallo cheese, stuffed with black olives, extra virgin olive oil, and crushed chili peppers, melted over hot coals until it becomes irresistibly gooey. Enjoy three evenings of food stalls, live music on the church square of Sant'Antonino, local crafts, and family-friendly spaces, all with free admission and a genuine village atmosphere overlooking the Gulf of Naples.

A hillside festival overlooking the Gulf of Naples

Arola is one of the thirteen hamlets of the Municipality of Vico Equense, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania. It is a village of a few thousand inhabitants nestled at an altitude of about 490 meters on the side of the Lattari Mountains facing the Gulf: a natural balcony where the August air is cooler than on the coast and where the cheesemaking tradition of the Sorrento Peninsula has never faded. Here, in early August, the square of the church of Sant'Antonino Abate becomes the beating heart of the Riavulillo Festival, one of the most iconic gastronomic events in the entire Sorrento area.

This is not a mass-market event: it was born in the village, thrives on the work of volunteers and grills fired up along the alleys, and for this very reason, it retains an authentic character that attracts local families, curious visitors from Naples, and tourists vacationing between Sorrento and Castellammare every year.

The riavulillo, the little devil of Arola

The riavulillo is a small smoked pasta filata cheese, hand-crafted by local dairies and stuffed with black olives, extra virgin olive oil, and crushed chili peppers. Its name, in the Neapolitan dialect, literally means "little devil": a direct reference to the spicy kick of the chili hidden in the soft heart of the cheese.

Its true consecration, however, happens on the grill. Placed on hot coals, the riavulillo softens slowly until it melts; the smoked crust darkens, and the filling becomes a spicy cream to be scooped up with rustic bread. It is the ritual everyone waits for and the reason why this little specialty has become a symbol of the area. The product has been awarded the Municipal Designation (De.Co.) by the Municipality of Vico Equense, and the festival is currently seeking regional recognition as a "Typical Festival of Campania".

Three evenings of food, fire, and conviviality

The formula, perfected over decades, remains intentionally simple. For three consecutive nights, the village fills with food stalls and open-air tables. The setup begins in the late afternoon and continues well past midnight, with the grills never stopping. Around the food stalls, you will find craft vendors and local products, while some areas are reserved for children, making the evening perfect for families.

What to eat

  • Grilled Riavulillo served hot, melted over rustic bread
  • Fresh pasta tossed with traditional rural sauces
  • Grilled sausage with seasonal side dishes
  • Grilled vegetables and vegetables preserved in oil from the Sorrento Peninsula
  • Local artisanal desserts
  • Local wine and craft beer

In past editions, alongside the riavulillo, other symbolic products of the Vico hills have appeared, such as Provolone del Monaco and porchetta.

Live music on the church square

At the center of the festival is a small natural amphitheater, the square of the church of Sant'Antonino, where local bands and artists perform. The program changes every night: from dance orchestras playing hits from the 80s to today, to Southern folk music groups with tammorre, traditional dances, and songs, all the way to evenings dedicated to Italian and Neapolitan singer-songwriters. This is the part that turns a simple tasting into a true village party, with the audience dancing between the tables until late at night.

Organizers

The festival is promoted by the Associazione Gli Amici del Riavulillo, founded in Arola to protect and promote the product, with the patronage of the City of Vico Equense and the Metropolitan City of Naples. The event is included every year in the municipal summer calendar "Vico d'Estate", which hosts events between the town center and the hillside hamlets from late May to September.

Why it's worth the trip

Those who come to Arola during these days find more than just a food tasting: they find a piece of rural Campania that resists just a few kilometers from Italy's most crowded beaches. The view of the Gulf at sunset, the scent of cheese on the grill, the folk music, and the affordable village prices make this event one of the most genuine experiences of the summer on the Sorrento Peninsula.

Riavulillo Festival — edition 2026

The 29th edition of the Riavulillo Festival takes place in Arola, Vico Equense, from Sunday, August 2 to Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Three evenings around Piazza Sant'Antonino with food stalls open from late afternoon until past midnight, smoked stuffed caciocavallo melted over coals, live music, craft stalls, local products, children's areas, and free admission.

Riavulillo Festival 2026: the 29th edition

The most anticipated summer event in the village of Arola returns from August 2 to 4, 2026, as part of the "Vico d'Estate" calendar of the Municipality of Vico Equense. The heart of the festival remains the square of the church of Sant'Antonino, where the food stalls, the stage, and the market stalls are concentrated.

The rhythm is the same as always: head up to the hills in the late afternoon, have dinner outdoors while the sun sets over the Gulf of Naples, and continue the evening with music until after midnight. The riavulillo, a small smoked caciocavallo stuffed with black olives, extra virgin olive oil, and chili, is served hot directly from the grill, accompanied by other traditional rural dishes from Vico.

The 2026 edition is promoted by the Associazione Gli Amici del Riavulillo with the patronage of the City of Vico Equense and the Metropolitan City of Naples.
