The watermelon festival in Piazza Casale, Meta
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Some festivals don't need grand stages to capture the heart of a town: T'Angurriata Rossa is one of them. Every summer, around mid-August, the Municipality of Meta, in the Province of Naples, dedicates an entire evening to the watermelon—the quintessential summer fruit—and transforms Piazza Casale into an open-air living room filled with red hues, music, and chatter until late.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene with the patronage of the Municipality of Meta and has grown edition after edition: 2024 marked the twelfth edition, and 2025 the thirteenth. A small classic of the Sorrento summer that requires no ticket: just show up in the square.
The true hallmark of the festival is the exhibition of carved watermelons: the fruits are worked and sculpted until they become display-worthy sculptures, lined up in the square under the evening lights. It is a work of patience and steady hands, closer to craftsmanship than cooking, and every year it offers different shapes and subjects to photograph.
Alongside the exhibition are the watermelon games, the loudest and most fun part of the evening, which involves children and adults alike and inevitably ends with some red-stained faces.
After the exhibition opens, the evening continues with live music and shows. In the 2024 edition, for example, the square hosted a concert by the band Why&Not, special guest Pasquale Palma, and a performance by the dance group US ACLI "Cassiopea"; the evening concluded with a raffle featuring prizes donated by local businesses, ranging from travel vouchers to smartphones.
The formula, simple and tried-and-tested, is always the same: opening around 8:00 PM with the exhibition and games, shows from 9:00 PM onwards, and the square staying lively until the night.
Meta is one of the smallest municipalities with the richest maritime history on the Sorrento Peninsula, overlooking the Gulf of Naples and just minutes from Sorrento, Piano di Sorrento, and Vico Equense. Its Marina was for centuries a port for shipowners and captains, and even today, the town's life is divided between the seafront and the central squares.
This is also the essence of a festival like T'Angurriata Rossa: in an area of Campania overrun by international tourism, it remains a deeply local event, designed by the people of Meta for the people of Meta, where the passing visitor is simply welcome.
The watermelon evening is part of a program of events that accompanies the town throughout the year, always organized by the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene:
If you are on vacation on the peninsula around mid-August, T'Angurriata Rossa is an opportunity for a free, authentic evening that is also suitable for children, far from the crowded clubs of the coast. You arrive in the square, look at the watermelon sculptures, listen to some music, and taste a slice of watermelon: nothing more, and that is exactly why it works.
As of the update of this page, the 2026 calendar published by the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene of Meta lists the events already held in the first part of the year (Baci da Meta in February, Pizza Junior and Pizza d'aMare in May) but does not yet contain any announcement regarding T'Angurriata Rossa.
This is not a negative sign: the watermelon festival is a local event whose announcement traditionally arrives close to the summer, often with only a few days' notice, via the social media channels of the Pro Loco and local businesses. In the two previous editions, the evening was held on August 13th.
For confirmation of the date and the detailed program, it is advisable to follow the Facebook page of the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene or call the office on Via Flavio Gioia.
The program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: as of the end of July 2026, there are no official announcements on the Pro Loco Terra delle Sirene website or the channels of the Municipality of Meta.
In documented editions, the evening follows a recurring structure:
Times, musical guests, and details of the 2026 edition will be communicated by the Pro Loco on its channels: prolocometa.com.
The names of the guests for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
Meta is served by the Circumvesuviana train on the Naples–Sorrento line (Meta stop), just a few minutes' walk from Piazza Casale. By car, from the A3 Naples–Salerno motorway, take the exit for Castellammare di Stabia and continue on the SS145 Sorrentina.
In past editions, free parking was made available at the "P.V. Marone" High School, near the Circumvesuviana station.
Free admission. The evening generally starts around 8:00 PM with the opening of the carved watermelon exhibition and games, followed by music and shows from 9:00 PM.

Piazza Casale is a village square: arrive early if you want to see the carved watermelons in peace, and leave your car away from the center because traffic on the peninsula is heavy in August. Always check the date and time on the Pro Loco channels before leaving.
