The neighborhood festival for San Rocco in Piazzetta Angri, August 16th
On August 16th, the day dedicated to San Rocco, the Angri district of Sant'Agnello gathers around its small square for the «Festa del Rocc». It is a neighborhood festival in the most authentic sense: no massive stages or grand productions, just a local square filled with chairs, families, and music for an evening that begins around 8:30 PM and lasts until late at night. The event is part of the summer program of the Municipality of Sant'Agnello, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania.
Invoked for centuries as a protector against epidemics and the patron saint of pilgrims, San Rocco is a highly popular figure throughout Southern Italy. In the Sorrento Peninsula, his cult has remained linked to local districts and neighborhoods rather than large parish churches: it is the neighbors who organize, from generation to generation, the street decorations and the festive evening. In Sant'Agnello, this local devotion has remained intact, and the Piazzetta Angri district is its natural stage, just a stone's throw from the sea and the citrus groves that still define the town's landscape.
The program of the «Festa del Rocc» is essentially musical and intentionally simple. The formula has not changed for years: it starts with a band warming up the square, followed by local voices and a repertoire that everyone knows by heart. In 2026, the evening will feature the Holdas band, followed by Alfonso (Fofò), Bruno, and Giovanni Cinque, performing a mix of classic Neapolitan songs and folk music.
In Sant'Agnello, San Rocco is celebrated in two different districts at two distinct times. Alongside the Piazzetta Angri evening on August 16th, a few days later, the Maiano village hosts the «Notti d'Autore» (Author Nights) featuring art, crafts, and street performers, where the famous San Rocco meatball is prepared. This is a sweet-and-sour meatball made with twenty-one ingredients—including raisins, pine nuts, grated cheese, stale bread, and parsley—linked to the ancient taverns of the village, for which the Municipality has initiated the De.Co. (Municipal Denomination) recognition process. Those in the Sorrento Peninsula around Ferragosto can therefore follow the entire series of celebrations, from the neighborhood party to the gastronomic rediscovery.
The Angri district is one of the historic centers of Sant'Agnello, a town of just over nine thousand inhabitants nestled between Sorrento and Piano de Sorrento. Here, village life is not a tourist postcard: the small square and the nearby Largo Annunziata remain the places where the district identifies itself, hosting concerts, book presentations, and, in December, Christmas markets organized with the Pro Loco throughout the year. The «Festa del Rocc» is the most defining moment of this calendar.
The festival is part of «rEstate Sintonizzati», the summer event program of the Municipality of Sant'Agnello, which distributes concerts, theater, open-air cinema, and tastings from July to September between Villa Crawford, the Belvedere Marinella, the Spiaggia di Caterina, the Oasi in Città, and the various districts. The municipal administration has chosen to make all events free, with the declared goal of transforming the most evocative places in the town into natural stages open to citizens and tourists.
Those looking for a massive festival will be surprised: the «Festa del Rocc» is small, local, and has no other ambitions. For this very reason, it is one of the most genuine opportunities to understand how summer is experienced on the Sorrento Peninsula, far from the panoramic terraces and seafront clubs. You arrive on foot, stand or sit on a chair borrowed from a neighbor, and sing along: it is the truest version of the Campanian Ferragosto.
On August 16th, 2026, the San Rocco festival returns to the Angri district of Sant'Agnello, in the province of Naples. Join us in Piazzetta Angri at 8:30 PM for an evening entirely dedicated to folk music and Neapolitan songs.
The Municipality has included the event in the «rEstate Sintonizzati 2026» program, presented by Mayor Antonino Coppola and the Councilor for Culture and Events, Marcello Aversa: a schedule that runs from July to September, crossing the districts, historic villas, and beaches of the town, with the declared goal of transforming the most evocative places into natural stages open to citizens and tourists. All events are free.
A few days later, from August 20th to 22nd, the celebrations for San Rocco continue in the village of Maiano with the «Notti d'Autore» featuring art, crafts, and street performers, along with the traditional sweet-and-sour San Rocco meatball.
The program is as released by the Municipality of Sant'Agnello in the «rEstate Sintonizzati 2026» calendar; any changes will be communicated through the official channels of the organization.
