Float parades, masquerade balls, and traditional sweets in the heart of central Sicily
Amidst rolling hills and wheat fields, at an altitude of 642 meters, the town of Resuttano (Caltanissetta province, Sicily) celebrates one of its most cherished traditions every year: the Resuttano Carnival. Organized by the Pro Loco, the event has long been considered one of the most eagerly awaited and lively occasions in the entire Nisseno area, attracting visitors from neighboring towns.
The beating heart of the Carnival is the parade of allegorical floats, which kicks off from Piazzale Papa Giovanni Paolo II and winds through the streets of the town center. The floats depict famous characters, fantasy figures, or current events and are the result of long collective work: in the weeks leading up to the festival, groups of friends and families gather to build them, creating an authentic moment of bonding that strengthens the community's ties.
Beyond the parades, the program comes alive with masquerade balls, live music, DJ sets, and costumed groups that enliven the evenings, especially on Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. There is no shortage of confetti showers and the essential tasting of local confectionery specialties, from fritters to traditional Resuttano sweets.
Resuttano, whose name derives from the Arabic Rahal Sultan (fortified farm), is a village of about two thousand inhabitants nestled in central Sicily. Experiencing the Carnival here means discovering an authentic town, far from the major tourist circuits, where the festival still retains its genuine and participatory character: the pleasure of being together, building something with one's own hands, and sharing joy with the entire community.
The 2026 Resuttano Carnival takes place on February 22, 2026, in the town center, in the province of Caltanissetta. The program, faithful to tradition, includes the allegorical float parade starting from Piazzale Papa Giovanni Paolo II and winding through the village streets, accompanied by costumed groups, live music, and a shower of confetti.
The evenings are enlivened by masquerade balls, DJ sets, and tastings of local confectionery specialties. Full details of the floats and schedules are traditionally released by the Resuttano Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the number of allegorical floats, schedules, and evening events, is announced by the Resuttano Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the festival. The usual structure includes:
