The Chiusa di San Michele stop of the concert series along the Via Francigena in the Susa Valley
In Chiusa di San Michele, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Turin nestled at the entrance to the lower Susa Valley, the Regie Armonie along the Via Francigena festival stops at the evocative church of San Pietro Apostolo, located at Via alla Sacra di San Michele 2. The initiative, curated by the Itinerari in Musica Association, offers a series of free concerts held in the villages crossed by the ancient Via Francigena, the pilgrimage route that has connected Europe to Rome for centuries.
The Chiusa di San Michele evening focuses on the parish church's organ, accompanied by a choir. The program weaves together pages of the great organ tradition with famous operatic transcriptions, offering a listening journey that ranges from the Baroque era to Italian melodrama. It is a proposal designed for a wide audience, appealing to both classical music enthusiasts and visitors walking the pilgrimage path.
Regie Armonie was created to enhance the historical, artistic, and cultural heritage of Piedmont, choosing churches and significant sites along the Via Francigena in the Susa Valley as its stage. The Chiusa di San Michele stop is part of a calendar that touches various towns in the valley, from Avigliana to Susa, in a constant dialogue between music, sacred architecture, and the Alpine landscape.
Chiusa di San Michele owes its name to its proximity to the Sacra di San Michele, the iconic abbey of Piedmont perched on Mount Pirchiriano. Attending a concert in this village means experiencing music within a historical and spiritual context of rare intensity, where the tradition of pilgrimage meets contemporary musical culture.
Like all stops in the series, the concert in Chiusa di San Michele is free of charge, supported by the Piedmont Region, the Susa Valley Mountain Union, and the involved municipal administrations.
The concert in Chiusa di San Michele was held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 9:00 PM in the church of San Pietro Apostolo. Milena Mansanti performed at the organ, while the Corale Aurelio Sestero, directed by Maestro Antonio Cuatto, introduced and accompanied the evening.
The program alternated between organ pieces and famous transcriptions, including music by Bach, the celebrated Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana, and pieces from the Italian operatic tradition. Free admission.
