Classical music at the Precettoria di Sant'Antonio di Ranverso, along the Via Francigena
Regie Armonie Along the Via Francigena is one of the most evocative musical festivals in the Turin area: a series of free concerts that, every year between May and June, takes the audience on a sonic journey along the ancient Via Francigena route, in the heart of the Susa Valley. In Buttigliera Alta, a town in the province of Turin, the festival stops at one of Piedmont's most precious sites: the Precettoria di Sant'Antonio di Ranverso.
Founded at the end of the 12th century by the Antonine canons along the road for pilgrims heading to Rome, the Precettoria is a monumental complex of rare beauty: the abbey church preserves an extraordinary cycle of late Gothic frescoes by Giacomo Jaquerio, one of the greatest painters of the international Gothic style in Piedmont, as well as the wooden altarpiece by Defendente Ferrari. Managed by the Fondazione Ordine Mauriziano, it is now one of the most important art destinations in the lower Susa Valley. The acoustic and artistic setting of the naves dialogues naturally with live music, making every concert a multisensory experience.
The program for the Ranverso stop favors early and Baroque repertoires, with ensembles specializing in period instruments: viola da gamba, harpsichord, transverse flute, and antique instruments bring the evenings to life, highlighting the sonic heritage of the Susa Valley. The festival, curated by the Associazione Itinerari in Musica, is part of a wider itinerary that touches churches, sanctuaries, and cathedrals in the area, from Avigliana to Susa.
The day of the concert in Buttigliera Alta weaves together music, art, and tradition: the concert is preceded by guided tours of the abbey church and the Jaquerio fresco cycle, while the area around the Precettoria is enlivened by the Sagra del Canestrello e del Cioccolato, a delicious event celebrating the local traditional pastry. It is an opportunity to discover the historical, artistic, musical, and gastronomic heritage of this corner of the province of Turin, in Piedmont, all in one day.
